Mrs. Metsker's Counseling Corner

Hello OAC parents!

I plan to send out a newsletter to you like this monthly to help keep you informed on what is going on at OAC in terms of our Counseling program. I am excited to work with the amazing kids and families at OAC!

Who am I? What do I do?

My name is Erin Metsker. I am in my 12th year of education. This is my 6th year as a school counselor and before I was a school counselor, I was a teacher for 6 years. I have always known Overbrook to be a part of my home. I live southwest of Lawrence on a farm.

A school counselor has many jobs. One thing that I do is teach whole class counseling lessons. Your child will have my class multiple times a week. Currently we are working on identifying emotions, Zones of Regulation, body language and how to be an active listener. In October, we will begin to move into bully awareness and safety. I will provide more information on that as we get closer.

I also see students on an individual and small group basis. I work with students that might be struggling with some emotions about things going on in and outside of school. I also help with conflict and build peer relationships. I teach skills and strategies to help students have a strong social/emotional foundation. Really, anything that your child would like to visit about or may need some help with, I am happy to do it.

I am also a link to community resources. I am happy to help provide guidance to anyone that may need help with outside services whether that be mental health services, food assistance, etc. Never hesitate to reach out!

We have a really cool opportunity to be a part of the Harvester's backsnack program. Your child should have brought home a purple or white paper that looks like the one below. This is a voluntary program and anyone is eligible for it. Students will bring home a bag on Friday's with some easy to make food options/snacks that are kid friendly. At any point you can be added or also taken off this program if you would like. If you did not receive this note, please let me know and I will make sure to get it to you! The first delivery of food will be the first week of October. I just need to know numbers at the end of September. If you need more information on this, just let me know!
