Ipad Apps and Assessment in Math
Dave Nolan and Marcie Dunnill, Huntington Ridge P.S.
Our Vision
Learning Goal:
We are learning how students can use ExplainEverything and Math Chat to demonstrate oral and/or written communication in mathematics.
We will be discussing two main ipad apps: Math Chat and Explain Everything that we have used in Dave's Grade 5 class.
These apps allow for:
* collaborative problem solving/inquiry
* self reflection and peer assessment
* assessment for, as, and of learning
* observation of student thinking (hear student voice)
Theory of Action
If we use accountable talk strategies in differentiated open tasks to give our students the opportunity to express their mathematical reasoning, then our students will have many opportunities to improve their ability to communicate thinking throughout the process of problem solving.
Curriculum Focus:
Number Sense and Problem Solving

Guiding Questions ~ Facilitator: Jessica Partridge
Guiding Questions:
- How do you assess all this learning as students use technology to explore and think? Do I truly know what students know, think, and understand?
- How does this strategy support assessment for learning and/or as learning?
- How does this relate to the curriculum expectations?
- How would this translate into reporting and evaluation?
