From the Principal Tony White.....
Fuses are short these days. I was in line at the pharmacy, and they had signs to divide us into two lines but only enough staff to operate one line. There were about 10 of us in line, and a man walks up and crosses to the sign that reads "Prescription Pick-up/Drop-off." "Sir, we only have one line. You'll need to head to the back of that line." "Excuse me! I don't like to be talked to that way! That was very rude! I'm following the directions! You're not! This sign says pick-up!" Another customer chimes in, "That's what I've been saying!" Puzzled, I looked up from my phone and wondered why this was a problem for him: they clearly didn't have the staff, and all the rest of us were in this long line. Shouting at staff members wasn't going to make one appear, and it certainly didn't cause him to get special service where he stood.
There is a shortage of patience, kindness, and mercy in our society these days, and shouting at someone for something they can't help or for merely doing their job isn't going to solve the problem, change the outcome, and for our purposes as parents, guardians, and educators - model what our children need to see from adults in order for them to emulate these critical behaviors. Times are tough right now, and they'll get tougher if the next generation doesn't see how to peacefully resolve conflict, handle disappointment, and have positive, productive conversations with people with different opinions.
Regardless of what is happening in our day, let's make a concerted effort to continue to choose kindness. Volcanic release is tempting but never works out for anyone. The recipient feels degraded, the volcano will soon feel regret, and that's not even to begin talking about any witnesses' feelings. In this day and age of social media, it's easy for us to forget people have feelings. But, everyone does, and if the next generation is to stand a better chance than our own, we need to make sure we are always acting like we are aware of this simple fact and model empathy at all times.
Have a wonderful weekend, and if you're celebrating Valentine's Day early, enjoy it with your favorite Valentines!
