Principal's Message
Dear Chávez families,
I have some important news to share. After five wonderful years as principal of Chávez, I will be moving south at the end of the school year to be closer to my family. I have accepted a position as an elementary principal in Medford School District.
This move is bittersweet. I appreciate the wonderful Chávez community so much. It is such a caring group of students, families, and educators. You and your children all have meant so much to me! But I also look forward to returning to the Rogue Valley where I started my career in education and have strong roots.
The Chávez principal position will be posted for applicants soon, and we will inform when the new principal is selected.
With gratitude to our community,
Ms. Pearson

Conscious Discipline for Parents
Are you curious about Conscious Discipline? Click here for a 45 minute video. You can also learn more at this website: https://consciousdiscipline.com/about/parents/
WHAT IS CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE? Conscious Discipline is a research-based program that helps adults stay calm enough to see misbehavior and upset as a signal to teach instead of punish. It then provides effective strategies for teaching social-emotional and life skills to children. Building healthy, brain-smart families that help children grow and learn.

P.E. Corner with Ms. Terri
We just completed our Kids Heart Challenge program in our P.E. classes. Students learned and practiced different ways to jump rope with a short or a long jump rope. Currently we are learning and practicing the skills of volleying and striking. Ask your student what those terms mean and how we practiced those skills in class. We will use these skills in a variety of games and activities in the next few weeks. Our 5 minute run continues monthly where students are challenged to jog/walk for 5 minutes and see how many laps around the gym they can complete. We also keep track of the total and average number of laps each class completes.
Students have P.E. twice a week. Check with your student to see what days they have P.E. and remind them to do their best to wear appropriate shoes on those days (closed toe, shoes that stay secure on their feet, flat heels/soles).
Terri Kelley - P.E. Teacher

WHAT IS THE DUCK DASH?
The Kids Duck Dash is a one of a kind activity where kids ages 2-13 will get to experience a bit of the exciting running culture of Tracktown USA and run a race finishing on Historic Hayward Field. We hope to engage as many kids as possible in this activity to get them excited about being active and excited about their Eugene/Springfield community. Oregon Battle of the Books
Congratulations Girl Power! Our school champions! This group of 3rd graders - Camilla, Josie, Zoey, Delia, and Tawana, were the first 3rd graders ever to win our school OBOB competition. They showed teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship at the regional battles. In the end, only 16 of 47 teams advanced to the elimination round. These girls are motivated and are already preparing for next year!
To all other OBOB participants - it was a really fun year of reading, teamwork, and competition.
For those interested in joining OBOB for next year (current 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders), we will be having informational meetings this spring. Stay tuned!
AVID Corner
A group of Chávez 4th and 5th graders from Mr. Swanson and Ms. Amanda's classes participated in our first ever AVID showcase event held at the district office on March 9th.
Fourth graders, Oliver, Logan, Katie, and Kaiya, were showing their examples of a 1-pager. Fifth graders, Jazzy, Jennifer, Rowan, and James, showed their AVID binders, planners, and organization. These students all did an amazing job with their work samples, and explaining them to fellow students, teachers, and principals who visited the Chávez booth.
Students also had a chance to see what AVID looks like in middle school and high school by visiting others schools' booths. Overall, it was a great experience for our students, and a unique opportunity for them to show pride in their work, and to start thinking ahead to their future as AVID leaders.
Way to go team Chavez!

April Chávez Library News
In March, we used the Beanstack app in Clever to record for the 4J Read Across America Reading Challenge with the goal for all students to read or be read to 15 minutes a day. As of this publication, Chávez was in the lead districtwide, but the official winner has yet to be announced.
The top 3 reading classes at our school were: Mrs. White's class with 6,639 minutes read, Ms. Julia's with 6210 minutes read, and Ms. Amanda's class with 5957 minutes read. The top five readers were: Jonas Hurt, Brantley Modrell, Hawkeye Dey, Gilbert Jozwiak, and Calvin O'Neil.
A Sampler of Lessons and Books this Month:
Exploration into curiosity and careers. We’ll read Ada Quist Scientist with K-2, and in Grades 3-5, we’ll look at the Rube Goldberg machine and his life as an engineer and comic artist.
April is poetry month, so we’ll take the opportunity to celebrate the expressiveness, delight, and pure charm of poetry.
Also many new books just arrived. We’ve ordered nonfiction and fiction books that have been requested by students and that were needed in our library. Some books replace old worn out favorites as well. Please help your students to return books so they can check out the new ones:)
Please contact your librarian, Martha Dyer, with ideas and questions at dyer-m@4j.lane.edu
Ms. Baker’s 2nd Grade students created rhyming words from the read aloud book, Who is Tapping at My Window.

Happy Spring, Families!
The increased daylight and recent sunny days have certainly been happiness triggers for me. I hope you and your family are finding moments to soak in some joy and I wish you a fantastic spring break.
This month, I am thrilled to introduce you to ParentPlace.Care, a partnership between the Eugene School District 4J and the Oregon Healing Collective (OHC). I encourage you to explore it when you have a moment and to sign up for their newsletter. Parents throughout the district have repeatedly expressed a need for more support, and ParentPlace.Care is hoping to create a space for parents to connect, engage, and experience growth and healing. The platform will be continuously updated and moderated by mental health professionals offering new resources, topic areas, a newsletter, events calendar, and lived experience highlights.
Finally, a reminder that any and all families are free to reach out to me via email: sell_s@4j.lane.edu or by phone at 541-790-5383 (direct office line) if you would like to discuss your student or family's needs.
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon
Formative Assessments
Our teachers administer formative assessments in the classroom each and every day. The purpose of these assessments is for students to provide feedback to teachers about their ongoing learning. This information is vital to teachers and their lesson planning and instruction.
Ms. Kristin has provided an article with information for families.
