Week Ending 11-17-2023
Note from Ms. Ramos and Mr. Day
Hello Families,
We hope this message finds you well. As we embark on a new marking period, we wanted to take a moment to communicate with you regarding your child's academic progress and what to expect in the coming weeks.
First and foremost, we want to express our appreciation for your ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. Your partnership with us at Winand is invaluable and plays a vital role in your child's success.
Here are a few important points to keep in mind as we enter the new marking period:
Academic Progress: Please be aware that the start of a new marking period offers a fresh opportunity for your child to excel academically. If there have been any concerns or challenges in the previous marking period, now is the time to work on improving them. We encourage you to have open communication with your child about their academic goals and progress. Please sign up for a Parent Focus Account.
Communication: Our lines of communication are always open, and we are here to assist you. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's performance, don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers, counselors, or Ms. Ramos and Mr. Day. We are committed to helping your child succeed.
Homework and Study Habits: It's essential to establish a routine that includes regular homework (reading and math review) and study time. Encourage your child to maintain good study habits and stay organized. Consistent effort in these areas can lead to significant improvements in their academic performance.
Goal Setting: Set clear and achievable goals for the marking period with your child. These goals should be specific and measurable, such as improving grades in specific subjects, completing assignments on time, or participating more actively in class.
Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for your child's success. Please ensure that your child attends school regularly and arrives on time. If there are any concerns regarding attendance, please let us know so that we can provide appropriate support.
We are excited to work with your child during this new marking period and are confident that with your support, they can achieve their academic goals. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or need assistance.Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and let's work together to ensure a successful and productive marking period.

Reading Specialist's Corner
Hello Winand Families,
Please be on the look for news about your child’s reading skills. Coming home soon are your child’s scores from the beginning of the year reading screeners. Students in grades K-3 were screened in reading and this year the screener used was the Amira Benchmark Assessment. Students in grades 1-5 were screened in reading using the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment.
Attached to your child’s parent report will be an explanation of each assessment. Students not meeting the benchmark scores on Amira in grades K-3 and on MAP in grades 4 and 5 in reading will receive supplemental instruction. These screeners will continue in the middle and end of the year. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me at trhoten@bcps.org.

Counseling Corner
Counseling lessons this month will focus on relationship skills. Students will learn about, discuss, and practice various concepts including tattling, personal space, teasing, and peer pressure.
The character trait of the month is kindness. November 13th is World Kindness Day. Have your child do something kind for someone else on that day! Here is a read aloud you could share with your child about kindness- A Little Spot of Kindness

How Can I Help at Home: Asking Questions
When you’re working with your child at home, there are many ways you can help. One of the
simplest is to ask questions about their thinking. By expressing curiosity about your child’s
thinking, you can help them develop deeper understanding, build confidence in their own
abilities, and encourage the habit of justifying reasoning.
Questions to Ask
Here are four questions you can ask in almost any setting. No matter the math task, one of
these questions can move the conversation in the right direction.
Question 1: What do you notice?
Question 2: How did you figure that out?
Question 3: How can you show your thinking? (e.g., picture, model, equation)
Question 4: Do you see any patterns?
