The Cedar Scoop 2.0
October 3-7, 2016
Outlook 2.0 is Coming to Cedar Grove
Late Tuesday night, our Microsoft Outlook email will migrate to Office 365, a cloud-based service from Microsoft. After several months of testing and eliciting feedback from staff, MCPS is proceeding with the migration of all schools. What does this mean?
Changes at School
- While the changes to the Outlook desktop application will not be noticeable, staff will be prompted to log into the application the first time they launch it. Please refer to the directions, Using Outlook after the Migration, for steps on successfully logging into the Outlook desktop application after the migration.
- If staff have added your school’s private conference folder to their “Favorites”, they will need to re-add it after the migration. Please refer to the directions, Accessing Public Conference Folders, for support.
Changes at Home
- The biggest change staff will experience is to the webmail version of Outlook. The new version of webmail in Office 365 is a comprehensive email application that gives staff a variety of features they have not had previously. Furthermore, the way staff access Outlook webmail will also be different. Given these significant changes, we have developed a quick guide to help acclimate staff to the new webmail. Please refer to the resource, The New Outlook Webmail, for more information on accessing and using webmail at home. We also developed a short video that models the process for accessing the new webmail which can be found here.
- With the migration to Office 365, staff also receive free downloads of the full Microsoft Office suite on up to 5 computers per user! For more information on downloading and installing Microsoft Office, please refer to the directions, Download and Install MS Office, for support.
- When using the new webmail, staff will no longer have the ability to access their My Documents from the web. If staff wish to have access to their files from home they should consider uploading these items to Google Drive or OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud-based storage platform.
Changes on Mobile Devices
- Staff who receive MCPS Outlook email on their phones or other mobile devices will also need to update their settings in order to continue to receive email on the device after the migration. Please review the directions, Mobile Devices: Updating Your Account, for more details.
On Wednesday morning after the migration, Margie will be here to support us and answer questions to ensure a smooth transition. She will have paper copies of the resources mentioned above, and the complete Resource Guide can also be accessed at https://sites.google.com/a/mcpsmd.net/mcpstech/outlook

Safety Drill Feedback
Thank you for your work to prepare the students for the Lockdown drill on Thursday. We received great feedback from our cluster security coordinator. We continue to need to ensure that we are all conducting a sweep/scan of the hallway before securing the classroom doors. A proper sweep/scan would involve looking into the hallway with your upper body with a visual scan of each side of the hallway. You would then work to secure your door quickly, without leaving your full body exposed to the hallway. This would be especially important if there was a dangerous person or situation in the hallway. You need to ensure that you can close and secure your door as quickly as possible. You do not want to be fumbling to get the door closed. Keep this in mind as you think about your own practice to secure your classroom.
Our next drill will be a standard fire drill early this month.
Notes And Reminders:
- Interventions must be documented on myMCPS. See the directions posted by Lindsay recently on Cedar Grove Private. This includes interventions provided by the intervention team as well as those done in class by teachers.
- MCPS will be converting from air conditioning to heat starting this coming week, a change that does not always correspond to the weather. Please be understanding during this transition when we may be unable to adjust our temperature settings.
Share and Celebrate
- Condolences to April on the passing of her brother. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
- Thanks again to everyone for making our dads feel welcome on Friday and for making it a special time for our students.
