Haven for Hope- A Unforgettable Experience for Our Students
1. Physical Collocation- It was decided it was best to put everything in one place such as sleeping quarters, dining, educational resources, and other agencies to give help;
2. Partner Organizations- The idea that not one organization can meet all needs, therefore, over 100 organizations help with Haven for Hope such as Dress for Success and the GI Forum; and
3. Addressing the Root Cause- Haven for Hope addresses the root cause of why people are homeless.
One of the areas that we toured was the intake area, which is the first stop when someone needs help. Shockingly, over 2500 people go through intake each month. The outdoor courtyard area that sleeps about 700 people per night is for adults only and for people that have not even gone through intake, providing a safe place to rest at night. We were amazed at the 92% retention rate for people transitioning out of Haven for Hope, which means that once they graduate to living back in the community, they are still doing well one year later. Compared to other cities’ 60% retention rate, this number is very high and shows the true picture of how Haven for Hope helps get people back on their feet. Haven for Hope is a wonderful place that offers hope for our homeless community.
