Congrats Simona Mancini!
Scituate Senior Becomes First Woman to Play in the La Madonna
della Civita Soccer Tournament in Italy
SCITUATE, R.I., JULY. 26, 2023 – Simona Mancini, a senior at Scituate High School, has received
special recognition from Giovanni Agresti, the Mayor of Itri, Italy, for her groundbreaking
participation as the first woman to play in La Madonna della Civita, a soccer tournament that
has traditionally featured only male soccer players.
Reflecting on her experience, Mancini shared, “I didn’t originally plan to play in the
tournament. During my stay in Itri, a few family members of mine had plans to play in the
tournament, and they invited me to join.”
The La Madonna della Civita soccer tournament takes place during the Saint Mary’s Feast in Itri,
a festival dating back to 796 A.D. In the early 20th century the tradition was introduced in
Cranston due to the town’s sizable Italian community.
The tournament was composed of male players between the ages of 18 and 25. When Simona
was asked if she noticed any differences between playing on an all girl’s team in the United
States, versus playing on an all boy’s team in Italy, she explained that the differences she
noticed were more than the differences between genders, “Overall, the main difference I
noticed was that everyone in the tournament seemed to make passes pretty quickly, and
nobody kept the ball for very long."
Mancini has been part of the Scituate community her entire life. Her passion for soccer began
at the age of 3 when she entered Hope Elementary School. As she begins her final year at SHS,
she will be taking on the role of team Captain for the girl’s soccer team.
“Being part of the girl’s soccer team at a small school like SHS has given Simona so many
opportunities to gain confidence, build strong connections with teammates, and get extra time
to play,” said her mother, Bianca Mancini. “I’m so proud of Simona for having the confidence to
pursue this incredible opportunity. It was amazing to watch her play during such a historical
moment.”
Principal Michael Hassell praised Simona, stating, “Simona is a talented soccer player, who is
viewed as a leader by her coaches and peers at SHS. Her achievements will serve as an
inspiration to our student athletes, proving that having the courage to try something new can
lead to amazing accomplishments.”
From HOSA
The last day of HOSA-Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference allowed us an opportunity to explore Dallas! HOSA Members had the opportunity to visit The 6th Floor Museum and learn about the legacy of John F. Kennedy.
All delegates shined this week as they displayed their knowledge of healthcare topics! Julia Diraimo and Bella DeFusco were the first RI team ever to make it through very intense Round 1 tests. Maggie Collins, Abigail Chatelle and Blake Liptrot also earned a well-deserved top 10 finish in Health Education. We are so proud of our Spartans!

2023-2024 Student Schedule (August Release)
Our Director of Guidance, Dan Casey, is in the process of finalizing a school schedule.
SHS school counselors continue to work with students with schedule conflicts and propose options for potential solutions. We ask that you continue to be patient and proactive as we finish this process. We try our best to accommodate each student's scheduling need however, scheduling conflicts can create some compromises within student schedules. Please contact your teenager's school counselor with any concerns. Students will have the first two weeks of school to make any schedule changes.

As in the past, student schedules will be available to view and print on PowerSchool. Students and families that may have lost their username and password or are new to Scituate High School should contact the school at 647-4120. We ask that parents and students remain patient with any schedule errors as our guidance staff is working hard to “clean up” any loose ends. https://scituateschoolsri.powerschool.com
