December 2022
Dear Friends and Families of LBW
November was a great month of celebrating our families at LB Williams. Our successful LBW Carnival held by the PTO at the beginning of November was a huge highlight for all. After a break of two years, we were able to hold this for our families. The event was quite a success and our students successfully sold over $15,000 in raffle ticket sales. We appreciate all of you that volunteered at the variety of games and in the kitchen to allow the kids to have an enjoyable afternoon. Certainly, we are proud of our entire school and families for making this such an amazing event.
Before Thanksgiving, we were honored to have Science Steve from PBS at our school. DWU graciously allowed us to use their space since the students were on break. He had the students and staff engaged with his high energy presentation with multiple experiments. His love for science certainly was shared with our students. What a wonderful event for our students.
We celebrated our staff in honor of American Education Week Nov. 14th - 18th. Thank you PTO and others for celebrating our outstanding staff. There were several treats and also breakfast pizza provided by Vern Eide. We continue to appreciate & admire the work our staff does each day.
May you enjoy your time with family and friends during this holiday season! Only the best to each of you!

Notes from the Nurse
As a reminder, all medications need to be in an original container with a prescription label. A parent must give the medication to the office and fill out a form. As we continue to battle the cold and flu season please remember not to send any medication, prescription or over the counter, with your child.
Winter weather can quickly bring dangerous driving conditions. Please remember to keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle. This kit should include booster cables, a flashlight and extra batteries, a blanket or sleeping bag, extra clothing, socks, 2 or 3 large candles, wooden matches kept in a Ziploc bag, water bottles, energy bars, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, extra doses of any prescription medication, a shovel, and a yellow or red flag to make your vehicle visible. These kits take up very little space but can save your life in an emergency.
Have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

PTO News
The holiday season is upon us. It is a great time to reflect on all the wonderful memories of the year. The carnival definitely would be at the top of the list. The students had an amazing time and it was all because of everyone's help. Thank you for taking the time to volunteer and help out. We could not have done it without you. Our next meeting is December 6th at 5:30 at Blarney's. We will be discussing the carnival and planning our next big events. Please come and join us and share your ideas. The PTO and I wish you a wonderful Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

November 14-18, 2022 was officially American Education week! It is a time to recognize all of the hard work put forth by our teachers, staff, custodians, paras, bus drivers, librarians, and substitutes for the benefit of your children. 5th Grade Coin Drive
Did you know that 771 million people, or 1 in 10 people, do not have access to safe, clean water? On December 8, 2022, from 8:00 to 9:20 am, Miss Metzger’s LBW 5th grade Power Up class and Mrs. Wede’s DWU Children’s Literature class will be walking for clean water. The idea for this service-learning project transpired from a book club the DWU/LBW partners participated in. The novel they read was A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a dual narrative of two children living at different times in South Sudan. The novel centers around the hardships that families in South Sudan face in terms of access to clean water. From this story, a service-learning project was born.
Students planned and organized a coin drive from Dec. 2-8, to run prior to their “Walk for Water” event. Carrying gallons of water, this group plans to walk 3 miles total around the DWU Fieldhouse indoor track. They hope to simulate the daily trek that students in South Sudan and other countries must make to bring water to their family. Students decided all money collected through coin donations will be sent to South Sudan School in conjunction with H20 for Life. The idea for this student-led project derived from the power of one story and all students involved hope to raise awareness and make an impact on those less fortunate.
Caring Closet
The Caring Closet of Mitchell is a great opportunity for any student in need of basic daily essentials. If you are in need of some supplies, please discuss those needs with any school staff member, OR any school staff member can bring forth a student’s needs. If the school does not currently have the needed items, the school will reach out to The Caring Closet of Mitchell, and our volunteers will do our best to help fulfill the student’s needs. The request of items is completely confidential. There are also Pop-up days listed in the link below.

Reminders
- Please call the office before 8:45 if your child is late or will not be here. 995-3090
- We will be distributing fliers, classroom info. and important items every Friday. Please be sure to check your child's backpack.
- If you have a new phone number or address, please update your information in the office. This includes work phone number, personal phone numbers, and emergency contacts. When we have an urgent situation, it is vital that we are able to contact a parent. Sending a note with your child works, as does calling the office. Thanks in advance.
- Winter is here! Our weather can change quickly in the state, so we want to be prepared for an emergency dismissal. Please be sure that we have updated information in the office as to what your plans will be in the case of an emergency early dismissal. For example, if your student typically rides the bus, we need to know if you want them to ride the bus if we dismiss early. Thanks for keeping up informed!
Weather
Please be sure to have your student dressed appropriately for the changing weather. This includes hats, gloves, warm coats, and soon snow pants and boots. All students will go outside for every recess unless the wind chill temperature is below zero.

New Family or Household Information? Please Update Today!
Do You Have a New Phone Number OR Address?
If you have changed addresses or phone numbers (work, home, or cell) since the beginning of the school year, please contact the school office or send a note with your child to update this information. That also pertains to the emergency contact number and doctor/clinic info.
Each week we are finding phone numbers that are no longer in service. We cannot stress enough the importance of having current information in case there is an emergency with your child or an early release from school.
