TCEA 2018 TAKEAWAYS
AND MORE . . .
Dr. Nikosi Darnell
I have experienced the pleasure of attending and presenting at TCEA for the past three years with my colleague Dr. Rebekah McPherson. This year we were privileged to teach the course Ready, Set, Teach . . . Online!, which is a whole other topic for discussion another time.
In this newsletter, I want to share some of my favorite takeaways from this year's conference. The information I share is by no means comprehensive, but highlights some of my new finds that you might find helpful to you as a parent, educator, or clinician.

What You Talking About Willis?
Check out a few of the story telling apps Tara discussed during her session - they're awesome! I've already started using Imagistory with my speech-language clients to work on speech intelligibility and grammar, and they love it!

Thank you Liz Fambrough, Brandye Roland, and Bronwyn Rumsey for your expertise! Check out these tech divas' presentation by clicking on the button below.
It's Gettin' HOTT in Here
This was a great course for making sure we as practitioners are using technology in a well-thought out manner to facilitate deeper learning in our clients/students.
Check out this useful diagram for assessing cognitive engagement in clients/students.
Exhibit Hall Finds
Strawbees
Students are challenged to develop technological innovations by creating 3D models, of just about anything they want, using the simple tools of . . . drum roll please . . . straws and connectors. What a shock! I know it might seem oversimplified, but take a look at the video below to become familiar with the process.

Peekapak
This research-based and literacy-focused learning platform integrates concepts like empathy and self-regulation into early language arts instruction in class and at home. It leverages technology to easily engage, extend and track learning with families, as well as excites students directly within fun personalized learning experiences to collect data and insights.
As a speech-language pathologist and child development specialist, I can see how this tool could be especially beneficial to families of children with autism spectrum disorder or an executive function deficit.
Buckner Discovery
Take a look at what Buckner Discovery has to offer for your students.
The Empathy Toy
I think this would be a great tool for speech-language pathologists to use in their individual sessions, as well as social groups. Below is a photo I snapped of one of the building structures utilized for facilitating team building, as well as a video I linked so you can see how this tool works.
Enjoy!
