October, Open House, and Rainbows!

Welcome to October! It sure felt like fall this past weekend, including cooler temperatures and some bright new colors to the trees! We are looking forward to continuing to spend time outside enjoying the beautiful weather. Please help us ensure students are comfortable by sending them in layers and to make sure to bring those layers home too! We have noted an increase in lost and missing hoodies and want to make sure students and families are not missing anything!

We have a number of events coming up this month including our Open House later this week (please see below!) and conference later this month. Please be sure to check out our Open House flyer below and make special note of the thoughtful and important fundraiser our wonderful Grade 5 students have been organizing. Thank you to our entire Grade 5 team (staff and students!) for working together and please consider contributing to the bake sale if you are able - either by baking or enjoying a delicious treat at Open House!

RK Finn Ryan Road Elementary School Open House - Thursday, October 6 (6-7pm)

On Thursday, October 6, we will host the RK Finn Ryan Road Elementary School Open House - in person! We are so excited to welcome our community back into the school and feel strongly that spending time in the wonderful learning spaces we have is so important!

Caregivers and students are invited to attend together and will have the opportunity to circulate the building visiting their classroom and the school. Please help us ensure everyone is safe by keeping students with you at all times while you enjoy touring the building.

A Message from our Grade 5 Team: Hurricane Fiona Fundraiser - Bake and Art Sale

Hello Ryan Rd staff and caregivers,

I'm writing to share that Ryan Rd fifth graders are organizing a fundraiser in support of those experiencing hardship due to Hurricane Fiona (a category 4 hurricane affecting Puerto Rico and other islands in the Caribbean). In their words: "We would like your help raising money for Puerto Rico. They have been affected by Hurricane Fiona.
3 big ways they have been affected are: flooded streets, power outages, and destroyed buildings.
Because of this damage, we want to help. We will raise money by selling art and baked goods. Our fundraiser will be on October 6.
"

Ryan Rd's open house is Thursday, October 6, at 6pm, and fifth graders will be managing a table of baked goods and student-made art for sale (ingredients listed in case of allergy). We would love for you to attend, check out some treats and art, and make a donation!

Here is a fifth-grade level article explaining the disaster.

If you can't make it to Open House, or would like to make a donation outside of the event, there will be a donation box in the main office where contributions can be made, starting Monday 10/3 and ending Friday 10/7.

If your student would like to contribute art to sell, they are invited! We encourage color drawings on 8.5x11 paper, but we accept a range of sizes and mediums for visual art. 3D art may be accepted with a thumbs-up from Ms. Patel (lpatel@northampton-k12.us). This art should reach Ms. Patel's room before the end of the school day on Thursday 10/6. Classroom teachers may drop off items in room 2 or place pieces in Ms. Patel's mailbox.

If you would like to contribute a baked good to sell, you are also invited! Baked goods should have an ingredients list included in case of allergy. Baked goods should be brought to school by 5:45pm on the day of open house, Thursday 10/6.

With gratitude,

Ms. Patel and the Fifth Grade

Sunshine Calls

Big picture
Over the past few weeks, we have started another way of acknowledging and celebrating all of the wonderful acts of kindness and good choices RK Finn Ryan Road Elementary School students are making each and every day. Any member of our staff can fill out a Sunshine Call slip for a student and submit the slip to my office. Once I receive the slip, I visit the student to let them know how proud we are of them and to keep up all of the good work! We then add a ray of sunshine (the top part of the slip!) to our board and I call home to share some sunshine as well.

Our goal (and my goal!) is to call each and every student this year as every single child in our school is spreading sunshine, everyday.

Yo-Yo Fun with Tyler and Michael

RK Finn Ryan Road Yo-Yo Performance 2022
Thank you Tyler and Michael who visited our Physical Education classes this past week and showcased their amazing yo-yo skills! Students (and staff!) really enjoyed watching them and even had the chance to practice some skills at the end of each performance.

Many students inquired about how to learn more about how to yo-yo. Tyler and Michael shared that they are available at A2Z for free weekly yo-yo lessons!

RK Finn Ryan Road Student Leadership Opportunities

Big picture
Sam and Aspen helped us make birthday announcements this week and selected the song we played to celebrate and Emma and Deryn also shared the message they wrote regarding the Grade 5 Hurricane Fiona fundraiser!

As a reminder, Ms. Minton has shared forms with students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 to complete if they would like to help us make these announcements, select a song, help with breakfast, and help with various leadership activities throughout the year!

Below is the link to the document or your child can ask Ms. Minton if they need another copy!

RK Finn Ryan Road Elementary School - Free Library!

Ms. Crowther, our wonderful RK Finn Ryan Road School Librarian, has thoughtfully taken on expanding and increasing access to a library of free books for students.

Ms. Crowther has shifted the existing free library bookcase to the main library space and has been working during library time to teach and encourage our students how to take, borrow, and share books that have been donated or are duplicates from our collection.

We are using simple red stickers like the ones below to help designated books that are "FREE" and no expected to be returned to the library. Please feel free to encourage your student to keep or share these books.

Thank you Ms. Crowther!
