Spain Park High School 02/07/2020
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
We had an incredibly busy week with a variety of events that not only educated our students but opened the door to many opportunities for them in the future. On Monday, our Business & Entrepreneurship Academy participated in Job Shadowing across our city. On Tuesday, Seniors ordered their cap and gowns for graduation, Wednesday morning we had our Athletic Signing Event with 14 students committing to athletic institutions across the United States, and on Wednesday evening we hosted the Girls’ Basketball Team Area Tournament. On Thursday, we had a late start due to inclement weather and Thursday night we enjoyed sharing course selection and curriculum information with our parents and students as they make the important decisions for the 2020/2021 school year. Curriculum night was well attended and a big success. We finished the week by spending time with our future Jags from Berry Middle School this morning. Spain Park is truly the school that never sleeps.
The highlight of our week was the beginning of our Black History Month Celebration. Our Social Studies classes heard Mr. James “Jake” Sanders, Mr. Robert Vickers, and Mr. Willie Walker, Negro Southern League Baseball Players, speak on their experiences with the League. The students also visited the traveling exhibit from the Museum. We are fortunate to have The Museum as our guests this year, joining the celebration of The Negro Leagues’ 100th Anniversary. Please be sure to enjoy the photos of the week below. We have many activities planned throughout February and look forward to highlighting each week.
Congratulations to our girls’ and boys’ basketball teams who will be playing for the area championship this weekend. The girls will play tonight at 7 pm at Spain Park, and the boys will play Saturday night at Mountain Brook, game time is 7:30. Come out and support the Jags!
As always, I am available to hear your feedback on how we can make SPHS a great place to be.
Respectfully,
Peter L. Giangrosso

Information from the Nurse Laney
Scoliosis Screening
The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health require that school districts in Alabama offer and provide scoliosis screening for male and female students in grades 5 through 9.
Screening is performed by observing the uncovered spine, viewing the student from the back, side, and with the student bending forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. Parents of students found to have signs of possible spinal abnormality will be asked to see their own physicians for further evaluation.
Girls and boys will be screened separately to ensure privacy. They can wear gym clothes or other clothing that may be removed easily. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal deformity, please let us know and your child will be exempt from the screening process.
This year it is scheduled for 3/11/2020 as an opt-in instead of an opt-out program. See the form below that must be returned to the nurse in order for your student to be screened.
No one should be attending school if they have the following symptoms:
Vomiting - must be able to tolerate a regular meal and keep if down for several hours without vomiting before returning to school
Diarrhea
Fever of 100 degrees or higher - must be unmedicated and fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school
Uncontrolled cough that interferes with classroom instruction
Please notify the nurses if your student has been diagnosed with the flu by a physician. The nurses track the numbers of flu cases each year. You may contact the nurses at blaney@hoover.k12.al.us or (205) 439-1430.
