ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
7on/7A
We have gotten right to work on Unit 3, Ratios and Proportional Reasoning. We have been working on finding unit rate, solving proportions, and learning about how proportions (or direct variation) can be represented through tables, graphs, and equations. (MGSE7.RP1 and 2) We learned the song “y over x” to the tune of YMCA…maybe your student will sing it for you! Next week, we will continue learning about how proportional relationships can be expressed through a verbal description, equation, graph, and table. We will have a quiz over these skills on Thursday, January 16th. A study guide will be given out on Monday. Next, we will be solving proportions with percents and figuring out tax, tip, commissions, mark-up and markdowns. (MGSE7.RP.3) These are such important and real-life skills. The students really seem to enjoy learning the real-life skills.
Please remember that if students have questions, need help, or extra support. There is a math help session every day. The schedule is below.
MATH HELP SESSIONS
70n Thursday 8:00-8:30

8th Wednesday 4:15-4:45
Every AM 8:00 Beyer will help any math student!
8A
We are starting a new unit for the new year. Unit 5 on Linear Functions is a short unit, mostly review, so we are easing students back into math. The quiz will be Wednesday, January 15th and the test is January 24th. After this unit there are only 2 more units in the 8th grade curriculum. We should be done by the beginning of March. We will then move on to 9th grade standards to better prepare them for next year, being able to do this has helped our students so much.
Social Studies
Happy 2020! We are so excited to begin our history unit, starting with a look at the Middle East. We are also looking forward to our 7th grade Junior Achievement trips in March. Students will attend JA with their social studies teacher, and we are looking for lots of parent volunteers to join us at the World Congress Center for this fun field trip! The dates printed in the Lions Roar were incorrect, here are the correct dates and the corresponding teachers: Monday, March 9 with Haber, Tuesday, March 10 with Chanco, Wednesday, March 11 with Munzenmaier and Wesker, and Thursday, March 12 with Berger. Finally, we are completely out of 3x5 notecards. We will use them several times throughout the history unit, so please send in 2 packs (lined, preferably) pretty please!
Science
Welcome back!
We began our Evolution Unit on January 6. We are learning about how various species adapt and change over time and the process of natural selection.
Important Dates to Note
- Our first quiz of the semester will be Thursday, January 23 covering evolution.
- Our first test of the semester will be Thursday, January 30 covering evolution. Students will be given a study guide to help them prepare for the test.
Reminder that science help sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday morning at 8am.
Thanks! Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kane, Ms. Moore, Ms. Chereck, Ms. Villiume, and Ms. Fairlie
Reading
Happy New Year to all of our reading families! Have you set a reading goal for the year yet?
Our classes are continuing to work with nonfiction skills and will keep on using high-interest texts which span many subjects. We are currently learning the last two nonfiction signposts: 1) Contrasts & Contradictions (aka ‘the unexpected’) and 2) Word Gaps (a vocabulary strategy). We will have a short quiz on Friday, January 17 regarding these two skills.
Remember that students should be reading twenty minutes each day outside of class time. Ask your child about the reading goal they have set and their progress toward reaching it.
Language Arts
Welcome back from ELA! We started our next unit with another lap around narrative writing, this time, with a flash fiction story in which students practice their development of theme (RL2), dialogue (W3, meaningful and properly punctuated), and descriptive details (W3, specifically regarding facial features and clothing.)
We are now moving into argumentative writing and analyzing argumentative texts (W1 and RI8). Students will learn techniques for properly arguing a claim, as well as using sources to successfully backing that claim up (RI8, W1a, W1b).
Please ensure that your student has a choice novel with them here at school, every day!
Sincerely,
Mr. Shea (maternity leave sub for Mrs. Patel), Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews
Spanish
¡Hola padres!
We hope you had a great holiday break with your child, family and friends. We would like to thank you for all of the warm holiday wishes and gifts that came our way. We are so thankful for your support, and for all that you do as parents. As we move into the new year, students are learning the verb Estar (to be). Next week, they will be learning how to use prepositions of location with the verb estar to describe the location of people and objects. Students will have a quiz on these topics on Wednesday, January 22nd. All vocabulary, materials and instructions for these tasks are available in Google Classroom. We ask that you please check in with your child regarding their daily study time as they continue their journey en español!
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown, Sra. Clark & Srta. Underwood
