Joey Hertzberg Receives Leukemia and Lymphoma Society 2018 Mission Award
All the Orange County-Inland Empire high school students nominated as 'Student's of the Year' attended with their teammates, friends, and families. Joey, representing FHS, worked hard on his campaign over the last 7 weeks and ultimately turned in approximately $11,000 to help fight blood cancers.
At the Gala, the LLS Board presented a few of the students with awards for going above and beyond. A group of students from Newport Harbor teamed up together and won the top award for raising the most money. Joey was also recognized as a high achiever and received the LLS 2018 Mission Award. This special award is presented to the candidate who best exemplifies the LLS mission and integrates the most outreach and spread of awareness throughout his campaign. At the end of the evening, with all the students on stage, LLS announced that in total, these couple of dozen high school students from Orange County, had raised over $305,000 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It's amazing what kids can do!
Joey thanks you, the support from the FHS staff, the Foothill Mountain Bike Club members, and all the students who supported his campaign. He learned a tremendous amount from participating in this worthy cause and hopes to continue making a difference in years to come.

Lord of The Flies Digital Breakout Box Puzzle
In his 10th grade English class, Mr. Leo Spengler (Mr. Hershberger’s student teacher) collaborated with FHS Connect Coach Derek Johnson to adapt a web-based Breakout EDU puzzle inspired by the popular Escape Room phenomenon. Using their knowledge of the content learned throughout the literature-based unit, students used critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity to solve puzzles to open a virtual locked box on their laptop devices as an engaging and comprehensive review of Lord of the Flies.
“The most memorable moment for me,” according to Mr. Spengler, “was when a group of students opened a lock and leaped at least twenty feet in the air. Their excitement was palpable, and it was inspiring to see students so animated about learning! They realized the power of cooperation and creative thinking, alongside their own ability to overcome ostensibly bewildering challenges.”
According to their website: Breakout EDU is “an immersive learning games platform.” With Breakout EDU kits, you can “turn your classroom into an academically-focused escape room... facilitate games where players use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles"
