Laurel High School's Career and Technical Education

It's Fall Y'all!

We are excited about the things that are happening in our career and technical education center here at Laurel High School. This month we are highlighting our Health Science department. Ms. Tesha Arrington is the professor for this program. The Health Science department has been very busy in the month of September, which will be highlighted below. To be a scholar in the health science program, they must have an interest in the health care field as a career, pass the state assessment for Biology and Algebra I, be eager and willing to learn, and exhibit self-discipline. .

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT LAUREL UNIVERSITY?

WORK SKILL FOCUS-Time Management

Time clocks have been installed in each of the CTE classrooms. Each scholar clocks in and out of their classes. The scholars are enjoying the real world workplace experience. They use their fingerprints to clock in and the professors run attendance reports at the end of the week.

Laurel University's Health Science 2021 Blood Drive and District's Voluntary Vaccination Drive

The Health Science II scholars assisted the staff of SCRMC with our school district's voluntary vaccination drive. Also, in collaboration with Vitalant Blood Services, they had their annual blood drive. Ms. Arrington and her LHS HOSA scholars would like to express sincere, heartfelt gratitude for each and every person that helped make the blood drive a success and giving the gift of life. They met their goal of 31 units and exceeded the goal by 3 units.

They would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to Mr. Jason Edwards and the staff of Papa John's Pizza of Laurel for their generous contribution. The scholars and Vitalant staff were smiling with full bellies and it would not have been possible without Papa John's support.

Thank you to every student, faculty member, parent, and community members for your undying love and support for all things Laurel.

Health Science Scholars learning about Emergency Services

Ms. Arrington's Health Science II scholars are learning about emergency services and how to respond to potentially life-threatening situations. The students lab exercise was measuring and recording vital signs. Since hypertension is known as the 'silent killer,' what better place to start than with blood pressure. The scholars had to choose the right cuff size, followed by locating the brachial pulse in the bend of either arm. Put it all together and you get #Sphygmomanometer + #Stethoscope.

A Moment with Dr. Bartee

Greetings Laurel High School CTE Scholars:

This is Dr. Yvette Bartee from the “Counselor’s Corner”. As your new counselor, I want you to understand that you are the ones with the bright and audacious minds that will change this world in ways unimaginable. You have within you the gifts, talents, and abilities to get the job done but you must believe in yourself, apply yourself, and persevere to see the outcome of your hard work. Career and Technical Education prepares you for so many career opportunities beyond belief, as well as prepares you to be college and career ready.

As your counselor, I will leave these words of the late former president of Morehouse College, Dr. Benjamin E. Mays and they read as follows: “I’ve only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can’t refuse it, didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it, but it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, give an account if I abuse it, just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.”

So every minute counts and it is up to you, “CTE Scholars”, to persevere, work hard, and go out into the world and make it a better place. I am here to support you, help you to become college and career ready, and provide you with the tools and strategies to become productive citizens!
