Guidance News Class of 2021
Updates 4.24.20
DIFFICULT TIMES
The year 2020 always sounded so futuristic and cool. Yet, here you all are being separated from friends and family wondering how your summer will play out. We understand that some of you are very disappointed, sad, and even devastated while others may be feeling relieved to be off the hook for some of the social pressures. Know that we are here for you. Reach out if you need anything at all. We are here for questions about college, career, academics, and mental health.
Take time each day to talk with friends, be active for 30 minutes, and do something kind for a person in your family.
Sincerely,
SHS Guidance
Taking Care Now and Always
Teenagers often hear "Enjoy these years, they are the best years of your life". Well, the SHS Guidance Department does not quite agree with this. It can actually be one of the hardest times of life. Fitting in and keeping up can be so hard. Social media and the pressures of always being connected to peers is a constant underlying pressure. Most adults we know would never want to go back to being a teeanger especially with social media and people taking pictures and videos EVERYWHERE!
Each day we challenge you to:
- To take a break from your digital world (social media, texting, Netflix, etc) each day for 1 hour.
- Spend 30 seconds to 10 minutes a day just paying attention to the world around you
Videos to help:
Nature Mindfulness - 3 minutes
Guided Mindfulness - 1 minutes

Missing Out on College Tours This Spring and Summer View this Video and focus on her recommendations!
1. Take virtual college tours – They’ll save you tons of money and help you whittle down your top choices. So, get your college list out and log-on. College admissions officers are still working and they want to meet you. In fact, they understand how many times you visit their site and that shows interest.
2. Bolster your resume, essays - Now that you have some time, make it awesome. Every club, sports activity, volunteer work, employment goes on there. But focus on leadership roles. Not enough? Look for online classes. Better yet, show them how you manage in a crisis.
3. Prep for the SAT / ACT - We know your jumping for joy you may NOT need to take the test but read the fine print: test optional means you need to consider what’s in your best interest. If you’re not a perfect student, chances are, it’s only going to help you. So, don’t opt out just yet. Testing resumes in August/September.
4. Get good grades - Use this virtual learning opportunity in front of you to get the best grades possible. Remember that your teacher is probably also struggling so those students who complete their work and go the extra mile will really stand out.
As with any crisis, there’s an opportunity. If you’re a parent or student, your opportunity is to use this time to really shine. And that’s the takeaway - turn this moment of downtime into college advantage time.
