Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
May 12, 2017
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
The last full week of school has seen positive classroom activity finalizing a variety of assessments and various student celebrations. Unfortunately, our good efforts were marred by the assault at Fulton Middle School. While ensuring the safety of non-involved students and investigating the incident, building and district protocols were followed . Pending arrival of the Fulton Police, the perpetrator was isolated and secured while injured students were immediately treated by the FMS nurse. Upon contact, each injured student’s parents elected to have their child remain at FMS to finish the day.
It is disturbing that FMS Building Administrators now have evidence that other students knew the knife was in the building. Unfortunately, those students chose not to share the information prior to the incident. Parent help is needed to encourage your child(ren) to share information with an adult as this incident would have been prevented by Building Administrators. As a parent, if you or your child is uncomfortable notifying any FPS Administrator of weapons, drugs, potential fights, or other distributing activities call the Fulton Police, Callaway County Sheriff or the Missouri Highway Patrol as they will respond to help keep your child and other children safe!
Nationally the incidence of suicide among our youth is alarming. Perhaps you are aware that Netflix has produced and is airing a series titled “13 Reasons Why”. This fictional show depicts the suicide of a young woman who leaves behind thirteen messages for specific people whom she blames for her death. It is loosely based upon a novel, with the same title, published in 2007.
Although this show is fictional, Fulton Administrators have seen an increase in student-to-student social media interchanges discussing suicide and, in some instances, suggesting recipients harm themselves. Any issue we become aware of is handled immediately and aggressively involving the student, parents, counselor, law enforcement and other resources. The following resource from the National Association of School Psychologists provides good information for you to discuss issues in “13 Reasons Why” with your child(ren).
Tuesday, May 16, 2017 is the last day of the regular school year. Students are dismissed two hours early to start their summer activities.
Thank you for sending great kids to work with. Best wishes for the summer.
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
