Special Update
Spain Park High School 03/27/20
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
The news from Governor Ivey yesterday closing our schools was something I expected to happen. Once reality set in, I was like many of you, in disbelief. It is hard for me to understand we will not have our students in our building for the remainder of the year.
However, I am optimistic and confident that with the resources and resolve our community has, we will continue to provide our students with quality instruction. Our teachers, counselors, support staff, and administration have been meeting to plan for education to begin again on Monday, April 6th.
Next week, Monday, March 30th through Friday, April 3rd, will be used to finalize our planning, as we wait to receive the completed plan from the Alabama Department Of Education. The ALSDE is faced with servicing 138 school districts in our state, each having its challenges. I hope we all can be patient with one another, knowing that we all are doing the very best we can do to get us through these difficult times.
At the beginning of next week, we will be sending out a timed schedule for our students to come into the building to get the essential items they need for instruction. This is not a time for visiting or to hangout. Students are asked to “Grab and Go” and to follow the CDC Guidelines on social distancing. This information will be sent by Callout, SPHS Website, Remind, and Google Classroom.
So what can you do to help your student and us?
I think it is important for you to give us time to process all of the information and guidelines we will get from the ALSDE and our district over the next few days. Hopefully, early next week, we will have everything we need to comply with the guidelines. As soon as we get this information we will give you a way to communicate your questions to us.
It is also important for you and your student to actively check for information that is sent out by teachers, counselors, support staff, and administration.
Starting Monday, in preparation for April 6th, students should be getting into a routine that is conducive to learning:
Proper rest and exercise
Replicating the School Day
Setting the alarm and getting up at the same time as they usually do for school
Getting dressed as if they were coming to school
Setting aside a special place for school work away from distractions such as tv, video games, social media, cell phone, etc.
Making sure you have balance in your daily routine
Focus more on learning and skill mastery rather than the grade
Your student’s teacher is the first point of contact
Our Counselors and Mrs. Cain stand ready to assist students who need help with stress anxiety, and other mental help issues
Mr. Prater is prepared to assist seniors with college admissions and life after high school
Remember, we are canceling school inside our building. We are not canceling instruction, learning, or the expectation for everyone to do their very best. We are not canceling exercise, kindness, getting outdoors, music or singing, time with family, reading, laughing, and, most of all, Hope.
As I share this information, I want you to know that the main focus should always be the health, safety, and well being of your family. You are in my thoughts and my daily prayers, and I ask you to keep us in yours as well.
Sincerely,
Peter L. Giangrosso
