This is a regional event and we are proud to host this inclusive event for our students and students from around the region.

GLOW OF THE WEEK: BAND

Our glow for the week is our Band. The Osbourn Symphonic Band earned Superior ratings from all judges, resulting in an overall Superior rating. This rating, combined with the Marching Band's Superior rating from the Fall Marching Assessment event, means that Osbourn will be recognized as a Virginia Honor Band program this year. The Virginia Honor Band designation is awarded by the VBODA to schools that demonstrate excellence with a comprehensive Band program. This will be the 3rd Virginia Honor Band awarded to Osbourn in the history of the school. The other two being in 1998 and 2019. Congratulations Director Andrew Wassum and our Osbourn Band!

Security Scanners

Last week we began implementing our pilot program using the preventive technology of security scanners at Osbourn High School. We are one of the first in the area to do so. Over the next week, we will conduct trial runs using the security scanners and will begin full implementation the start of the fourth quarter, Monday, March 20th.

We value student and staff safety. We will do whatever we can to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Our students did an amazing job adjusting to this new routine and we are off to a great start. If someone activates the security scanner, they will be asked to cooperate fully in determining the cause for the alert. If the search detects contraband or any type of weapons found on the person, authorities and parents/guardians will be contacted immediately. The purpose for this security measure is to prevent any students or visitors from bringing a weapon on to our campus. It is our hope that you recognize the need for this device that will be used to assist with maintaining a safe environment for all.

Student Behaviors

We are meeting with our students next week to review student behavior expectations. Specifically we will be addressing the importance of being on-time to class and the impact on their learning. We will also reiterate our expectations for behavior in the hallway and bathrooms. Students are held accountable for their actions. Parents will be notified if their student is in violation of our expectation or the MCPS Code of Conduct. Consequences will be assigned. We appreciate your support in having a conversation with your student about getting to class on time and making good choices. Your partnership is key in this process. An overwhelming majority of our students do an amazing job and demonstrate outstanding behavior as we reinforce in our curriculum and with our PBIS team. The students that choose to violate these expectations are held accountable. We appreciate the parents and students that have partnered with us and shared information that assists our discipline investigations. Together we can ensure a safe and inclusive culture at Osbourn High School.
