Important Information

Gearing up for an awesome year!

Welcome back! I know that most of you have already stopped by the office and picked up keys. It is great to watch the building come to life as we prepare for another awesome school year! I am looking forward to this school year as we explore all of the ways that we are BETTER TOGETHER! As we head into this final week of summer break, I wanted to provide you with a few updates and some information. I am looking forward to "officially" seeing everyone on Monday!

As you likely know, we had the opportunity to send a team to the AVID Summer Institute in Minneapolis MN a few weeks back. A big thank you to Janet DeMont, Mary Struve, Sara Studer, John Quan, Maureen Dehler and Tena Brazen for giving up a week of summer to learn more about AVID and plan for the implementation of AVID in our school. We will take some time during our August Institutes to talk more about AVID, however, I wanted to provide everyone with some basic information about AVID and what it might look like in our building.

Our goal for the 2017 - 2018 is to begin to implement aspects of AVID in our 5th grade classrooms (things such as the AVID binder and agenda planners, building upon WICOR strategies in our instruction and providing opportunities for exposure to post-secondary opportunities). In addition to this implementation, we hope to have a 3rd and 4th grade teacher pilot the AVID binder and agenda planner as well this year. Finally, we hope to raise post-secondary awareness throughout the entire building.

We will be building an AVID site-based team this year. It would be nice to have some representation from the lower grades on this team. Ideally, it would be nice to have one teacher from 5th grade, 4th grade, 3rd grade and one teacher from K - 2nd grade to serve on the site-based team. If you are interested in this, please let me know. I will offer "first dibs" for staff members who did attend Summer Institute this summer.

Please take a few minutes to watch the video below. This video provide some basic information about AVID, an overview of AVID's mission and some additional AVID information that will serve as a foundation for the work that we will do next week.

What Is AVID

Class Lists

At this point, the class lists are pretty set. They will go live to parents on Wednesday, August 9th at 4pm. While I hate to make adjustments after that point, please know that occasionally we do need to make changes and adjustments after Wednesday. I will try my best to keep those changes to a minimum.

August Institute Days

This year's Teacher Institute Days will take place on August 14th and August 15th. I will share a more detailed agenda later this week. In the interim, please review the link below for the district agenda for August 15th Institute Day.

Classroom Set up reminders

I had an opportunity to walk around the building this morning and it is looking great! I know that there is still a lot to do, but I am so appreciative of all the work that you are putting into making classrooms welcoming to our students and ready for Preview Night next Monday.

As a reminder, garbage in your classroom still needs to be brought down to the dumpster at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor. Thank you for breaking down your boxes. Please be sure to drag those boxes to the cart on the 1st floor across from Steve's office.

Thank you for your help!

Preview Night

Prairie Point Preview Night will be held on Monday, August 14th from 5pm - 7pm for all students. This will include welcoming our early childhood students, kindergarteners and 1st - 5th graders. I appreciate all of the work that you have done preparing your classrooms for Preview Night.

For those of you who were here last year, we scaled Preview Night back from years past. Our focus with Preview Night is providing an opportunity for families to visit the classrooms, meet the teachers and drop off any school supplies. Home & School members do have a presence in the building and will be asking parents to sign up for Great Art, order class shirt sizes and a few other housekeeping notes.

Home & School will be providing a dinner before Preview Night at 4pm in the Teacher's Lounge. I hope that you can join us!

Classroom Readers, Listeners, and Partners

Over the past two years, our partnership with the Oswego Senior Center has taken off. We will be continuing this again this year. Please let Janet know if you would like to have a classroom visitor weekly to partner with your classroom as a volunteer, read to your students, or listen to your students read.

As a reminder, the goal of this program is to develop a two-way relationship across generations.

Prairie Point Family Celebrations

Requesting Summer Updates

This is the part of our news letter where we can share exciting updates and pictures of ourselves or our family. I loved sharing some of the exciting accomplishments of our faculty members' children last year. Let's keep it going. If you have something exciting to share from the summer (weddings, grandchildren, academic, arts or sports accomplishments...) send them my way and I will include them in our next newsletter. I love when our celebrations include pictures!!!
