PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Definition:

A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into something else.

examples of physical properties:

  1. Color
  2. Brittleness
  3. Length
  4. Freezing point
  5. Boiling point
  6. Melting point

PHYSICAL CHANGE

Definition

A change that alters the form of appearance of a substance but does not make the material into another substance.

examples of physical change:

  1. Ripping
  2. Cutting
  3. Melting
  4. Freezing
  5. Evaporating
  6. Boiling
  7. Breaking glass
  8. Dissolving
  9. Crushing a can
  10. Chopping wood

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Definition

A characteristic that is observed when a substance interacts with another substance.

Examples of chemical properties

  1. Flammability
  2. Odor
  3. Toxicity
  4. Rust

CHEMICAL CHANGE

Definition

A change in matter that produces new substances.

Examples of chemical changes

  1. Baking a cake
  2. Rotting bananas
  3. Exploding fireworks
  4. Grilling a burger
  5. Cooking an egg
