Hispanic Heritage MEChA Presentation
At Monday night’s TTSD School Board meeting, the Board heard presentations from MEChA students and advisors on how our high schools were honoring Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15+.
"Hispanic Heritage Month means a lot to not only MEChA but the students at Tualatin High School, so this year we are planning on doing a week-long event at the school for all the students, not just the people of color. The week will be filled with activities that students get to do during lunch, after school, and before school." "We partnered with ASB and created a video about what Hispanic Heritage month is about." Tualatin High School Senior, Samantha Ramos.
"I believe culture lies in the commonalities we are able to find within one another. So not only is my culture the food on my table, the traditional clothing we wear, or the language we speak, it's also the quinceaneras to celebrate a girls 15th birthday in such a beautiful way, it's dancing until 2 AM while the little kids are asleep on the chairs in the corner, it's waking up at 8:00 AM to our moms blasting to our music. And most importantly, working hard, not to wealth ourselves but to take care of our people in need, and sharing what we can with whoever needs it.
My culture is also believing in a dream and doing what it takes in order to pursue it. I carry the dream my grandparents did when they immigrated to the US in search of a better life. The same dream my mom carried as she worked and studied hard to learn English through Dr. Seuss books at this very school. I carry the dreams of all those that have come before me and it is my goal to walk across that graduation stage in June of 2022 to make sure they know that all their hard work paid off in the end " Tigard High School Senior, Jane Polanco

Transportation Updates
Our thanks to TTSD families and students who have been inconvenienced due to delays in bus transportation this week. Our district is in a unique position as we are not experiencing the driver shortages that other districts are, however due to several absences this week, our routes have been impacted. Our transportation partners, Student Transportation of America (STA), assures us that we are bringing on new drivers and along with are current staff, feel confident there will be little to no disruption moving forward.
Masks Required For All Indoor and Outdoor Activities
Masks are required for all coaches, spectators, and staff during indoor and outdoor athletic activities in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. As a community, we want to take every step possible to stay safe and make sure our student-athletes are able to continue to participate and enjoy their experiences. We want to make sure that our entire community does its part to stem the spread of COVID-19 so our doors remain open and our classrooms remain full of students. For more information, please see the attached athletic guidance from the OSAA. OSAA Guidance

Families with 5th Graders: Enter to be Oregon’s Kid Governor
Oregon’s Kid Governor® program (ORKG) is a statewide civics program for 5th graders supported through Oregon Secretary of State’s office. Timed to coincide with Election Day in November, every school and home school in Oregon is eligible to enter one 5th grader to run in a statewide election that other 5th graders will vote in. Classrooms can vote in the election, nominate a classmate to run for office or do both! Oregon’s Kid Governor nominees work with their classmates to create a campaign video about why they want to be Kid Governor, their leadership skills, a community issue they want to address, and a 3-point plan that will help 5th graders across Oregon make a difference in their communities.
Now entering its fifth year, ORKG continues to be an outstanding opportunity for developing leadership skills as students are immersed in a meaningful civics experience. There is no cost, and the program provides a full classroom curriculum and information for parents whose students choose to run. Students gain valuable knowledge of our state government, how to take action through civic participation, and how people of all ages can choose to participate in our democratic society.
