Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Carers,
It’s so lovely to have the sunshine this week – although it’s a little chilly!
BUILDING UPDATE:
You will all have noticed that the portable classrooms have been removed from the carpark at the front of the school. It has really opened the front of the school. The flag poles have been reinstated too!
The second building will be ours on Friday. The interactive boards are fitted next week and our move dates are set for Week 10. See below for the details – your help would be really appreciated:
Y3 Move Day - Tuesday 19 June
Y4 Move Day - Thursday 21 June
If you are able to help please do send me an email or just come to the office at 9:30 am on the day.
OPEN DAY, OPEN NIGHT:
It was uplifting to see so many of you visiting our classrooms and exploring the school during our Open Day celebrations. Thank you for supporting us. The classrooms were vibrant with activities focused around Social Emotional Learning and The Arts. The Marketing Working Group, lead by Dyon Hunt and supported by Jan Tuck, were responsible for the organisation. The event was just fantastic!
REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE:
On Monday and Tuesday this week, I attended the RLC in the city. It was a two day packed conference where guest speakers included Stephen Dinham, Vivian Roberts and Simon Breakspear. It was so affirming for me as the drive behind the conference was about meeting childrens’ needs, excellence in learning and teaching and student engagement – many of the things that are a focus for us at Parkhill.
Throughout the two days the concept that resonated most with me was the need to develop within our children, as well as ourselves, a growth mindset. Reference was made to the work of Carol Dweck and her colleagues. Over 30 years ago they became interested in students' attitudes about failure. They noticed that some students rebounded while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks. After studying the behaviour of thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined the terms 'fixed mindset' and 'growth mindset' to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement.

VISION BOARD:
Come and add to our Vision Board! You will find it in the foyer beside my office! We are looking to develop a vision of what we, as a community would like the school play spaces to look like.

Open Night
What a buzz! Proud parents and engaged students showcasing their learning. On Wednesday 30 May, we saw many current and future parents visit the classrooms from 9-11am. It was lovely to see everyone also in our new F-Y2 building and admiring our beautiful light-filled, flexible learning spaces.
At 6pm little excited voices could be heard at the office as over 120 students waited for their passports, ready to begin the journey around the classrooms. Our focus this year was showcasing our 'Wellbeing Program' with the focus on emotions and feelings. Each classroom teacher had set up a range of activities which the students could complete before getting a stamp on their passport and moving on. The finale was in the Roger Beech Hall with our student choir singing and the lucky passport draw, which was won by a future 2019 Foundation student.
Y3 Food Drive
The Y3 students are doing a food drive for the homeless. The Salvation Army need non-perishable foods such as dried pasta, tinned food, etc. Please donate these items at the box in the front office.
Thank you,
Y3 students
