Circle UP!
Are you referring back to your classroom rules when handling classroom discipline? Remember, these were created by each class and agree upon by each class. Hold the students accountable for their actions. When you established the rules, did you and the students determine consequences? It may be a good time to go back and discuss this with your students. Remind them of the rules and consequences of not following them.
Time for a Brain Break!
Brain breaks can be as simple as having the kids stand up at their desk and the teacher says, "Everybody face south." "Now everybody face east." Students follow the directions. The teacher or leader can challenge students by making it more difficult: "Turn so that you are facing downtown." "Face the direction where the sun would be at 3:00 p.m."
To help the students out, you can make an anchor chart showing compass directions. Start slowly and then quicken the pace as students become more familiar with the directions.
You will find a book in the Teacher book corner in the lounge titled Refocus and Recharge! 50 Brain Breaks for Middle Schoolers. Feel free to check it out or browse through it during your lunch or conference time.

Praising Students
For example, "Good Job! I love the way you showed respect for our classroom environment by straightening the journals." "Great job! I like the way you helped Johnny without being asked to do that."
Remember, too, that we have Coyote Bucks as a reward. Each six weeks we draw winners but students have to have the Coyote Bucks to place into the box.You may give out as many as you like, even giving multiple bucks to students. Too often, we focus on the negative. Let's remember to focus on the positive and reward good deeds, good academics and good behavior.
