WHAT IS MY STUDENT LEARNING?

LANGUAGE ARTS/SOCIAL STUDIES

Next week, our students will be learning about letter blends, we'll be learning about the short o sound using the word families -ot, -og, and -op (such as hot, log, and top). We'll be working on word families with these patterns. We will continue to work on creating complete sentences with a capital letter to start, spacing between words, and with proper punctuation at the end.In reading, we will be practicing retelling a story and identifying the author's purpose in writing a story. In social studies, learning cardinal directions as well as positional words.

MATH

Throughout the next two weeks, first graders will continue exploring number relationships with the number 10. We will be practicing make all the combinations of 10. We will also be determining the missing addends within the sum of 10. You can practice this skills at home in a variety of ways. Some examples are:

  • holding up fingers and having your child tell you the number needed to make 10
  • rolling a dot cube and having your child tell you the number needed to make 10
  • call out a number and have your child quickly tell you the number to make 10

SCIENCE

Our first graders will continue becoming MUSIC MAKERS over the course of the next couple of weeks! We will be designing and creating our own musical instruments as we learning how sound energy is important to everyday life. We will also be exploring the parts of these instruments as we look at how a system works. If you have any items at home that could be used for our instruments, we would appreciate a donation (think paper towel rolls, empty cereal boxes, etc).
