Extraordinary Means

My Chemical Romance: The Kids From Yesterday
I chose this song because in the book, Lane and Sadie, the two main characters, are at a treatment center for their tuberculosis. Lane is new to his arrival, and he hates it. He hates not being able to work on college applications, getting the top SAT scores, and being the best in his class. He hates sitting around just to get better, it wasn't the life he wanted at all. At first he is a loner, but then he reunites with Sadie, a girl he met at summer camp about 4 years ago. At first it's awkward when they bump into each other. But then Lane and Sadie start to grow closer and Lane finds himself getting into Sadie's eccentric group of friends. All of them have abandoned their home lives to come here. They are insecure, and some want love, others are in pain, and don't know about the future. This song fits these group of teenagers because they break the rules, they go on escapades, they continue to try to survive as normal teenagers, even though they are dying. They live in yesterday, yet hope for the future. This song fits them perfectly as well due to the fact that the world continues to spin, and these teenagers are forgotten in their old lives, so therefore they technically are the kids from yesterday. Ecosmith: Bright
I chose this song because Lane and Sadie start to like each other while sitting at the gazebo at the sanatorium they've been placed at. They began talking once Lane cleared up some conflict that Sadie held onto for 4 whole years. They're sitting in the gazebo, and they start to relate to each other. They get to see a different side to one another, and actually have a heart felt conversation. Eventually they're relationship starts to blossom into something a little more. They begin to love one another, and the world fits into place. This song could also play when they have their first kiss, as well. They just light each other's worlds in this book, they are each other life boats. They stay afloat in the darkest of times by each other. Their love was unforgettable. Twenty One Pilots: Kitchen Sink
This song reminds me of one of my favorite characters in the book. Charlie. He is the sickest out of their group of friends. No one really understands him sometimes. He is always scribbling in his notebook at their lunch table, he plays a ukelele and writes music. He understands he probably won't live long, yet he continues to be optimistic. He does sometimes push his friends away. I think he knew in the end he didn't have a lot of time. And he wanted to be remembered. And trust me he was one memorable character in the book. I think that is why he chose to write songs and record them. He wanted people to remember him. I could picture this song going in parts where he pushed his friends away, played his ukelele, and sang his lungs out until his heart was content. He sometimes didn't make any sense at all to his friends, but he made sense to me. Link: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/twentyonepilots/kitchensink.html
Pierce the Veil: Props and Mayhem
This song you could place into a few parts of the book. For instance when Lane and Sadie and her group of friends sneak off into the night to go mess around, and feel normal again. They are full of poison in a way, and each one cannot fix their demons picking away at them. Lane kind of was like a savior to Sadie, she drowned herself in depression sometimes, and he was the guy who saved her. He kept her heart and hopes infinite.
This book could also relate to their friend Nick. He has loved Sadie for a long time, but she never gave him a chance. He deals with is own issues, and is always sarcastic and a bit funny. But I can see this song playing when he always has to be on drugs(pills) to keep himself happy. He can't get over that Sadie never loved him. Death Cab For Cutie: I'll Follow You Into The Dark
And sadly...this book has a tragic ending. Two people end up dying in this book. One of course, is Sadie. This song relates to the part when she passes away in the hospital. Lane sat by her side every single day, and she knew she was dying. She was his true love, and he lost her. And he is heart broken, and your heart breaks in half not just for Lane, but for their group. They lost two people that kept their little world on it's axis. After this, things were never the same, and eventually Lane was cured. But things were never the same for him. Link: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/deathcabforcutie/iwillfollowyouintothedark.html
