SEL Theme for the Month of February: Love
Love
Learning to appreciate is one of the most important attitudes and habits that lead to success, fulfillment and a love for life. H. Stanley Judd said, “Don’t complain because you don’t have…enjoy what you’ve got.” Being thankful needs to become a way of life that demonstrates the highest expression of respect and love for oneself and others. Through these expressions of love, respect, and appreciation… “a man’s words will always express what has been treasured in his heart.” – Luke 6:45.
“. . . what lies beneath us and what lies ahead of us are insignificant compared to what lies within us.” For it is what lies within us that, ultimately, defines the course of direction awaiting our “walk” through life.

TEAM 6A:
Students on Team 6A are showcasing their mad skills in and out of the classroom! We host our second ‘Team 6A Coffee Hour’ on the last day of the marking period. As Mathematicians they have learned how to find rates and percent’s and can now recognize the relationships between fractions, decimals and percent’s. As Scientists they can make Atomic Models and explain the different parts of an atom. In ELA, Team 6A has just completed a fiction short story unit. The students learned how authors structure their stories. This unit will be followed up by non-fiction short stories where students will enjoy how differently these stories are structured. In Social Studies each student had the opportunity to create a map of India. This clay map enabled students to see and "feel" the geography of this diverse country. Team 6B:
Team 6B designed, mixed, and named their own paint colors to discover the importance of equivalent ratios. We created everything from “Blurple” to “Blemrald.” Students discovered that we could create large quantities of our exact same colors by multiplying and dividing across our ratio tables. The following day, we used our sense of taste to extend the concept by making small and large amounts of the exact same fruit punch! Students were pleased to learn that ratios can be beautiful, delicious, and useful in our everyday lives!
Team 6C:
Team 6C made ice cream to see a yummy phase change. By using salt to lower the freezing point of ice we were able to remove enough energy from the cream to turn it to a solid from a liquid! This is a tasty science experiment that the whole family will enjoy.
Team 6D:
Team 6D kicked off the year with ONE WORD to help drive and motivate us in 2020! With a single word you have clarity and focus, and we hope that by choosing just ONE it will keep our attention for the next 12 months!
In Math we have been working with ratios and rates and have had a blast playing games, finding our resting/active heart rates, and even making necklaces to show equivalent ratios! We our continuing our percent journey this week and will be putting our skills to work through party planning. Looking forward to a great new year!!
Team 6E:
Working on our myth unit we had the opportunity to work with our resident art teacher extraordinaire, Jan Porinchak. Students learned how to make Medusa Collages.
In Greek Mythology, Medusa had two sisters. Medusa and her sisters were called the Gorgons. They were monsters that were impossible to kill. The ancient Greeks imagined them with big wide eyes, tusks in their mouths, snakes instead of hair, and scales instead of skin. Our team created their very own version of Medusa and enjoyed this fun interdisciplinary project.
Team 7A:
On Friday, January 17th Team 7A students participated in Jericho History Day. Since October, students have been researching a topic of their choice that aligns with the annual theme of Breaking Barriers in History. Topics chosen included Jane Goodall, the Voyager Space program, Barbie, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Their research was presented through exhibits, papers, websites, documentaries, and performances. Students enjoyed the opportunity to display their hard work and view the work of their classmates!
Team 7B:
After weeks of analyzing primary and secondary sources, our students submitted their projects for National History Day. This year's theme is Breaking Barriers. This is a national competition that Jericho participates in each year. Students have the opportunity to show off their research and creative skills by presenting their topic in the form of a website, documentary, performance, exhibit board or paper. Students enjoyed learning about each other's topics as they viewed their peers' projects. Winners will go on to the local, state, or national levels.
Team 7C:
January has been a fun month in ELA! 7C students presented their A Midsummer Night’s Dream scenes, and the acting was fantastic! All students used enthusiastic vocal techniques and movement to add drama to their performances. Also, the costumes were delightful since we had so many lovely fairies, donkeys, and aristocrats.
In this last month we also conducted a successful restorative circle on the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Students reflected on great relationships in their lives, analyzed the relationships in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and brainstormed ways people can deal with an unhealthy bond. 7C students showed great maturity, respect, and empathy.
Up next: A unit on dystopias focusing on The Giver!
Team 8A, 8B, & 8C:
Students worked throughout the second quarter on their National History Day projects. These projects afforded students the opportunity to delve into a topic of their choice and conduct in-depth research. Students learned how to locate credible and trustworthy sources, determine whether those sources were primary or secondary and cite them in MLA format through NoodleTools. Students then analyzed the information and used it to support their theses. The kids worked really hard and they have some incredible projects to show for it!

Tips from the School Nurse
Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression
Grateful people are more likely to behave in a prosocial manner, even when others behave less kindly, according to a 2012 study by the University of Kentucky. Study participants who ranked higher on gratitude scales were less likely to retaliate against others, even when given negative feedback. They experienced more sensitivity and empathy toward other people and a decreased desire to seek revenge.
There is also utility in gratitude such as making
amends or solving issues at hand. Reciprocity is not needed in feeling gratitude. The receiver is compelled to pay the goodness forward, generating positivity all around.
Next month we will explore how Gratitude effects sleep.
