Fall is Here!

Le Messager - École Frère Antoine October 2022

Adminstrators' Corner

Dear Frère Antoine Families,

After a beautiful, busy September, October has arrived with vibrant fall colors and we have been blessed with warm temperatures that have been enjoyed by our students as they enjoy the outdoors during their recess and outdoor physical activities.

We have been blessed with a wonderful start up to school this September. We are well into the routines of school and our students have settled into all the wonderful learning that is taking place in each classroom.

This fall, there are many reasons for the staff at École Frère Antoine to be thankful. We are abundantly thankful for being reunited with all of our Frère Antoine families in person once again. We are grateful for our families who have been supportive and helpful since the start of school. We are grateful for the words of kindness that we receive every day from our parent community. We are grateful for our bus drivers who bring our students safely to school. We are grateful for our office staff who work so diligently to ensure that families are taken care of when registering or calling the school. We are grateful for our custodians who ensure that our school is safe for our school family. We are grateful for our teachers who serve our students each day to ensure that they are learning and growing in Christ.

On Monday October 10th, we will pause and take time from our busy lives to celebrate Thanksgiving, a day when we humbly count our blessings and give thanks for the bounty we enjoy. May God's blessings be with you and your family during this time of Thanksgiving and throughout this school year. On behalf of the staff here at École FrèreAntoine, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy fall! 🌰 🍂

Meet the Teacher

On September 15th we held our “Meet the Teacher” evening at school. After two years of not being able to meet together in person, we were so thrilled to see the many families who gathered in the gym and then met with their child(s) teacher in their classroom. It was an amazing evening and we were so happy with the very high participation of our families. Our families are amazing!!

Thank you for meeting with your child’s teacher and learning about your child’s school year. We say a big “thank you” to each and every parent and guardian who is supporting their child.

We know that connecting with your child’s teacher is an integral part of learning about and sharing in your child’s learning experiences.

Finishing Touches to the Outdoor Classroom - Getting it Ready!

On September 22nd, our wonderful School Council organized an absolutely fantastic family BBQ that was so well attended. We are grateful to our parents who made this such a huge success. We are so thankful for our parent council for organizing this amazing event.

Outdoor Classroom Blessing and Opening Celebration

Prior to the family BBQ, we kicked off the evening with an official blessing and opening of our beautiful outdoor classroom. We are also so grateful that our Ward 77 Trustee Laura Thibert, other members of the board of Trustees, our chief Superintendent Robert Martin, Knowledge Keeper Gary Gagnon and Father Chad celebrated with the Frère Antoine school community.

Terry Fox Run

On September 22nd, we gathered together as a school community and enjoyed the beautiful day with a great run/walk for the cure with the Terry Fox run! Students brought “Toonies for Terry”. Collectively, they raised just over $560 in donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. Thank you for making a donation to Terry’s Foundation.

We are very proud of our students who continued the legacy of Terry’s dream. This is a strong tradition that we hold dear at École Frère Antoine. As we honor Terry, we learn about his goal to fundraise dollars for cancer research. We also honor Terry by being active and enjoying a great run together as a community. Terry once said, “Anything is possible if you try.”

Orange Shirt Day & Truth and Reconciliation

On September 29, 2022, students and staff at École Frère Antoine wore our orange shirts to acknowledge Canada’s Indigenous history and remember all the children and families whose lives were irrevocably changed through the tragedy that is to be found in residential schools. It is a time to honor those who survived, and to remember those who did not.

We started the morning on our TVFA student broadcast where we all listened together and learned about Phyllis Webstad and listened to her story of wearing an orange shirt on the first day of residential school and her experience on her first day at residential school. We learned about Truth and Reconciliation and why we have Orange Shirt Day.

Students participated in learning activities in their classes and discussions about the importance of this day to show that we are committed to the principle that Every Child Matters.

Grade 6A at the legislature school!

Our grade 6 students had fun learning about politics and government which is part of their grade 6 Social Studies curriculum.

Handicap Parking Space

Only family members displaying a Handi-Cap sign on the dash of their vehicle are able to park in the Handi-cap parking staff of the school parking lot. If you do not have a handi-cap sign, we ask you to kindly leave that space for those who have these signs in their vehicles and need this space for parking.

Custodian Appreciation Day

October 2, 2022 is National Custodian Recognition day, a day in which students and staff show recognition and appreciation for our custodial team. We recognize Neiford Robillos, Maria Arias-Grisales, and Virgina Barr who work tirelessly every day to ensure the smooth operation of our school. On this day, we say “Thank-you” and show gratitude for our custodial team who help to maintain our school and our grounds to be safe and look good everyday.

World Teacher's Day

Teachers play an important role in the lives of our students. Since 1994, parents and students from around the world have celebrated World Teacher’s Appreciation Day to commemorate the work and their contributions to society. Our teachers serve and care for their students to ensure that students feel welcome and successful. On October 5th, take the time to let your child’s teacher know that they are appreciated!

Certifi-Pattes

Mme Quintin and Mme Couture look forward to meeting with our first group of students in grades 1-6 on Monday, October 3rd during their lunch recess to celebrate how they shine their light forth to others. Students have been encouraged throughout the month with the theme of our school book "I am One" to be kind and to put forth positive actions and deeds. Students will celebrate with "PAWS" cookies and milk.

Thanksgiving Celebration

October is also a month for the celebration of Thanksgiving and students will have many opportunities to reflect on the things in their lives for which they are most thankful. After morning announcements, all students and all staff will be walking to the Church to celebrate Mass together.

On Thanksgiving, Monday, October 10th, there will be no school on this day.

Artist in Residence

We are thrilled to welcome our Artist in Residence Kathy Jessup, children's author and story teller who will be starting on October 17- November 2. Kathy Jessup started out as a broadcast journalist with the CBC, a career that combined two of her strengths: performing and writing. Kathy will work with all students in grades 1-6 to engage children in the art of storytelling.

Nowadays Kathy indulges her passion for storytelling in many ways: through helping children and adults create their own stories, by working with teachers to give them insight into the creative process and, of course, by telling stories whenever she can to whoever will listen. Over the years she’s performed her original stories and world folktales in schools, libraries, concerts and festivals across Canada and internationally. Kathy’s stories and articles have appeared in various publications including the children’s magazine chickaDEE, and the Alberta Centennial anthology Under the Wide Blue Sky: Alberta Stories to Read and Tell published by Red Deer Press.

Emergency Procedures Practice

Student safety is very important to us. Practices of emergency procedures, including school lockdowns, are scheduled during the year so students are familiar with expectations. In October, we will be having two practice fire drills and one lockdown practice. In the first fire drill that we have had so far, the students evacuated the school in an orderly and timely manner. As to ensure staff and students are fully prepared, we will practice two more fire drills and one lockdown without warning in the next few weeks
