Fall Activities & Sports See Continued Growth In Participation

With the beginning of fall activities and sports there is one thing that is for certain, our Vikings are passionate about being involved and representing Howell. The fall season has already seen girls tennis, girls golf and cheerleading have record numbers and many other programs are at full capacity. After having the largest participation rate in FHSD history during the 2018-19 school year it is evident that the excitement and desire to be involved continues to grow. This fall alone over 700 students at Howell are participating in an activity or sport. Congratulations to these young men and women and also to our coaches and sponsors for their continued efforts to represent Howell and our community in a positive way.

Choir "Leads" Way In Leadership Development

The Howell Choir program has been a leader in developing its students outside of the classroom and their concerts for several years. Led by Mrs. Fitzpatrick, the Howell Choir recently attended a student leadership workshop for area music students at Parkway. A heavy focus of the event was to learn how to serve their peers. The Howell Choir has developed its own leadership program and regularly attends the Viking Leadership Academy during Howell Time. Thank you to Mrs. Fitzpatrick and the choir for bringing more than just their talented voices to our Howell community!

Viking Leadership Academy Begins Fifth Year

Being involved in an activity, club or sport at Howell is about so much more than just skill development. Student's in Howell programs are actively involved in the community and are involved in leadership development through their programs and the nationally recognized Viking Leadership Academy. The Viking Leadership Academy will kick off it's fifth year of offering students the opportunity to grow and develop leadership capacity as well as opportunities to work collaboratively to make Howell a great place to be for all Vikings. The unique program was recently 1 of only 13 programs in the country awarded a Character.org Promising Practice for its efforts to develop young leaders.

During the 2019-20 school year, VLA will meet twice a month during Howell time. All Howell students are encouraged to attend these interactive sessions. A curriculum that is theme based is used to help develop leadership skills and traits that will help students to be successful at Howell as well as in their activity or sport and ultimately in life. The five themes that are the focus of the VLA program are:

  • Model It (R.I.S.E.)

  • Inspire Other Vikings

  • Challenge Other Vikings

  • Involve All Vikings

  • Celebrate Viking Accomplishments

The Howell Activities Department encourages all students to attend VLA. The dates for the first quarter can be found below. The Viking Leadership Academy looks forward to seeing a large group of Vikings in the main gym on September 4th for its first meeting of the year!

Those in attendance at the clinic will have the opportunity to perform at an upcoming football game. Thank you to our GG's & Co for offering this great opportunity!

NCAA Initial Eligibility Requirements A Four Year Process

As the school year begins it is important to remember that for those wanting to compete at the collegiate level after high school that academics are more important than what happens in the activity or sport. Without meeting college student-athlete eligibility requirements the dream of competing at the college level can come to an end. Below you can use the NCAA high school timeline as a way to stay on track for meeting initial-eligibility requirements. If you have questions regarding NCAA eligibility please feel free to drop by the Activities Office or visit your guidance counselor.
