Grade 8 Faith Day
During this day, our students will be in the company of other Gr. 8 students from all over the Greater Edmonton area as they hear Steve Angrisano's uplifting message of "Being a Superhero". After this day, students will dig into activities that will help the students take the message they have heard and put it into action. St. John Paul II welcomes this opportunity to continue walking with our students as they explore and strengthen their relationship with God.
Please ensure your son/daughter is properly dressed for the weather and has a bag lunch for the day.
Let's Go Make a Difference!!!
Chaplain's Corner
Last Sunday’s Gospel related the story of Jesus’ returning to His hometown of Nazareth. We heard that He got up in the Synagogue and read a prophetic passage from Isaiah. Then he declared that He was the fulfillment personally of that very reading.
The Gospel we hear today immediately follows this dramatic self-statement. He had been tempted about His identity and makes this announcement as the first public affirmation of Who He was. What we do hear today has two important features. The town’s folk are quite impressed with Jesus’ words. They know His parents and are quite excited that Jesus will make them proud and famous perhaps.
The folks of Nazareth were blinded by their rigidity and their seeing Jesus as limited to their own expectations. Jesus became a stumbling object, because they thought they could see Who he was, but could not because of their low-vision. They could see a little bit and so they thought they could see more than they could.
Jesus provokes us to admit we have low vision about most things and especially about the God of Revelation. Faith is a way of living with the admission that God offers us little glimpses and the grace to see them and trust in what is behind and beyond them.
When we say that we see, we are also saying that we do not see as much as we wish. In a sense, when we think we know it all, about God or each other or some subject, we really do not see it, but only enough to attract or distract us. In the scroll from which Jesus read last Sunday, He affirms that He has come to assist recovery of sight to the blind. This recovery is about our being blinded by what we see and think we have it. When we have “it” we really do not. Jesus left their sight, because their low vision lead them to think they knew Him and had It and they didn’t. See what I’m getting at?

Accountability Pillar Survey
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an
opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping
students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of
surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student
outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments
of student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual
Accountability Pillar Survey.
In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education.
In February, students in grades 4, 7 and 10 students and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of
education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May, and will be reported
publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
EICS SURVEY
A second survey directly from Elk Island Catholic Schools called The Assurance Survey gathers information to ensure St. JPII's progress is in alignment with our collaboratively created School Assurance Plans, celebrates elements that are in alignment, and helps us as an St. JPII community to realign where needed, and thus guiding St. JPII's future direction.
When these surveys arrive in the mail or in your email inbox, thank you in advance for completing them. Your voice matters to help guide St. JPII's future!

EICS Family Wellness Program
Service Delivery
Each school is staffed with a Family Wellness Worker (FWW), who works under the direction of their School Principal and the Assistant Superintendent of Faith & Wellness. FWW's receive clinical guidance from a Registered Psychologist.
The primary function of the Family Wellness team is to provide social and emotional support to students and families. Family Wellness Workers meet with students and parents to assess needs, set goals, identify required supports, and plan appropriate interventions.
They collaborate with school system staff and community resources to build a “village” of support around students/families who are struggling.
Referrals
Parental consent is required for FWW services.
Referrals to the Family Wellness Program may be made by students, parents/guardians, school administration, teachers, or other school staff (e.g. school counsellor or collaborative response coordinator).
Parents and guardians can access these services by speaking with the Principal or contacting the school's Family Wellness Worker directly.
Family Wellness Contact Information
It is with mixed emotions that Amanda Davidson, our FWW, has resigned from her position here at St. JPII. What this means is that we will be without a Family Wellness Worker at our school. We realize that Amanda has been providing many on-going supports for numerous students and families and we are currently looking for a replacement. Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause and thank-you for your understanding.
