Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast
August 7, 2022
Phoenix Family,
Welcome Back!
I hope you had a wonderful summer. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year. CA has made many changes that I believe will make us better prepared to serve our students. Welcome to the Phoenix Family class of 2026! You are in for an amazing four years!
New Staff
Each year brings positive change. We are grateful for those that have served our students and have left for new adventures. But, I am so excited about our new staff and believe they will help us serve students better than ever! Joseph Indelicato will be teaching freshmen Pathways and is our Phoenix Head Soccer Coach, Travis Brown will be teaching AP Human Geography and is our Phoenix Assistant Soccer Coach, Aaron Geer will be teaching Advanced ELA 2, and our very own class of 2019 CA graduate Avery Jones will be teaching Algebra 2. Please check out their bios further down in the Phoenix News!
I am pleased to announce the Daina Gardner is now the counselor at CA. She brings a wealth of experience to our campus and a deep commitment for student success. She has served the last 6 years as counselor at Grapevine Middle School. She is already hard at work making sure every student has a 4 year plan and is enrolled in the right classes this fall for success. Please check out her bio in the Counselors Corner. Leah Lorkowski is our Attendance/Data Secretary. She is no stranger to CA with her son graduating in 2020 and her daughter this past year. Leah, we are so glad to keep you in the Phoenix Family!
Safety
For students to be successful academically they must be safe. In the world we are living this has become a real issue! This year ALL CA students must wear their TCCNE ID on a GCISD CA Lanyard while on the main TCC NE campus. The lanyard will be provided! If a student is not wearing or does not have their TCCNE ID, they will be sent back to our building by the TCC NE police. This will result in a discipline consequence. The TCCNE ID identifies our students as ECHS students and TCC police are prepared to take extra care of our students in an emergency and communicate with us the status of our students in an emergency. Our students will always wear the ID while on the TCC NE campus. Parents, please talk with your student about the importance of compliance with this new rule.
To make sure all students are safe entering and exiting the building, all car riders must be dropped off to the left of our building when entering the parking lot from highway 26 in front of the warehouse. Please do not turn right and pull up in front of the school. We must keep this area clear for buses. Also, please do not pull into a parking spot to wait for your student. This causes your student to walk between buses, which is dangerous, and then the car is sometimes backing out when buses are trying to pull in. This makes an unsafe situation for everyone. Again, all car riders must be dropped off and picked up in front of the warehouse which is to the left when turning into the parking lot from highway 26. Together we will keep our students safe!
CA Daily Schedule
A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student daily schedules for the 2022/23 school year! If our schedule was not already difficult to keep up with, we have gone an extra mile this year. However, I believe the new schedule will benefit students.
Here are the changes:
- Monday - Thursday first period and sixth period meet every day
- Monday - Thursday second, fourth and fifth periods meet on Mon/Wed or Tue/Th
- Monday - Thursday third period will be clubs, tutorials and lunch (think sixth period with lunch)
- Friday will remain the same!
I know this may seem confusing, but as you begin to look at schedules in Skyward this will help!
Open House
Parents mark your calendar for Monday, September 12, to attend Collegiate Academy Open House. You will be able to meet CA teachers, TCC NE advisors and staff. Meet with all the students clubs and organizations and most importantly join the Phoenix Family Booster Club. To be a Booster Club member you must make a commitment to volunteer or donate money or both! This will be our first year to compete in UIL soccer! If you have a student on the team or you love soccer, we will need your help supporting our athletes with meals and running the concession stand. Our home games will be played at GMS stadium!
Win The Day!
Our theme for the 22/23 year is: Win The Day! We all need a vision of where we are going, to work hard, to not make excuses, to learn from failure, and most importantly to be grateful. These 5 strategies for success are the foundation to achieve a high school diploma and an associate degree in four years. Sometimes though the goals seem over whelming. This year we are going to focus on winning the day. To do what we need to do that day, knowing a collection of winning days will propel us to reach our goals.
Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle wrote: “Our grand business undoubtedly is, not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand.” So, when your students become overwhelmed and they will, remind them just to Win The Day!
I am convinced this will be Collegiate Academy’s greatest year! We are prepared ready to get this year started! Great things begin on August 17, when we PhoenixON!
Always grateful,
Ms. Knutz
Phoenixes,
I hope you all have had a wonderful summer with friends and family and have taken some time to relax and recharge for the 2022-2023 school year. Below, I’m going to share a new procedure and a few reminders for the upcoming school year.
College Textbooks
During Pathways classes, students will complete a Fall 2022 Textbook Authorization form. Once the form is completed, students will be able to pick up their college textbooks from the TCC Barnes & Noble bookstore during their Pathways class. It is important when completing the form that you fill out the course name and section number correctly. If an access code is provided with your textbook, you will set that up immediately in your pathways classes.
IMPORTANT: Some course materials have an access code along with the physical textbook. This code allows you to access coursework that your college instructor will assign to you through a digital platform. Please be careful not to accidentally throw this away when you are opening your course materials. The cost to replace this access code could range anywhere between $75 - $185.
First Day of School
On the first day of school, ALL students must be on campus. You are not a CA student until your attendance has been accounted for on the first day of school. This includes Juniors and Seniors. Even if you are eligible for independent study (some Juniors) or Optional Flexible School Day (some Seniors), you must check in with attendance on the first day of school. Please check your email for more information on attendance and the first day of school.
Attendance
The relationship between attendance and achievement is a crucial part of a student's high school and college success. Additionally, our school is funded based on student attendance. Our staff is dedicated to supporting your students to earn not only a High School Diploma, but also an Associate’s Degree. Parents, we need your partnership, and students, we need your commitment to be in attendance in your high school and college classes.
Parents, please check your students' high school attendance as you normally would in Skyward, and watch this How-To video to check your student's attendance for their TCC classes.
TCC Attendance Policy
Each instructor records and submits attendance for each class meeting. Regular and punctual class attendance is expected. Student absences will be recorded from the first day the class meets. In case of absence, it is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor.
Students are responsible for any work missed regardless of the cause of the absence. The student must discuss such work with the instructor and should do so immediately on returning to school. Communication between the student and instructor is most important, and it is the student's responsibility to initiate such communication. If students do not appear at the prearranged time or meet the prescribed deadline for makeup work, they forfeit their rights for further makeup of that work.
Students who stop attending class for any reason should contact the instructor, high school counselor, and the Dual Credit office to officially withdraw from the class. Failure to officially withdraw may result in a failing grade for the course.
A student in an on-campus course missing a cumulative of 15 percent of the class meetings and not keeping up with the course assignments may be dropped at the discretion of the instructor. (see TCC Webpage for more information)
New Procedure - TCC ID & Lanyards
All Collegiate Academy students must wear a lanyard while on the TCC campus. TCC has communicated to us that all Early College High School students must wear their TCC ID on campus, and it must be visible at all times. This is for your safety; TCC will use your TCC ID to identify you as an Early College High School student in case of an emergency.
Schedules in Skyward
Skyward schedules opened Aug 3rd for you to view your schedules. Schedules are not final until the first day of school. I am working on placing everyone in the correct classes. If you have any questions please contact me so we can figure out next steps.
Requesting Schedules Changes
Students, the way you change your schedule will be different this year. We have to be able to know where you are during the school year. Please fill out this FORM to request changes. This is to be used for your college and high school classes. Once Mrs. Gardner has looked over the form, she will contact you with approval to move forward. If you are not approved for a schedule change, Mrs. Gardner will reach out with the why. We are doing this to make sure all students have a correct schedule and we know where you are on both campuses. The first week in Pathway class you will cross check your schedule to make sure everything is correct.

Back to School Tech Check
GCISD students and families are getting excited for the 2022-2023 school year! Before you return on Wednesday, August 17, what are some steps you can take to ensure a successful start to the year? The first is a Back-to-School Tech Check!
Each year, GCISD technology staff see an influx of devices that need repair during the first week of school. This can lead to students missing valuable time in class in which their device is needed. To ensure students start the year in the best possible way, please complete the following simple steps before you return to school:
- Who: Students in 3rd grade and above
- When: As soon as possible before the school year begins
- What: Complete the following steps to ensure your device is working properly
1. Locate your device charger and ensure it is working properly
2. Power on your device
3. Ensure your screen and keyboard are working properly
4. If anything is not working:
- - Submit a HelpDesk Ticket for fastest service -or-
- - Email technology@gcisd.net for assistance
- - Click here for more information on how to order a charger replacement
Thank you for your cooperation as we get ready for an incredible 2022-2023 school year in GCISD.
