Influences and Career Beginnings

J Cole started rapping at the young age of 12. His cousin gave him guidance how how to rhyme and word play. He was inspired Canibus, Nas, Tupac, and Eminem. Cole liked telling stories in his lyrics. When he was 14, he had many lyrics but no beats of his own to record them with. So, his mom purchased him an 808 beat machine so he could produce his own music. By age 17, he started posting songs under the name of "Therapist." Cole appeared on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 3. This is when Cole first started getting recognition.
