Devotion on the Gospel

Devotion on Mark 9:38-50

Talk about it

  • If sin is so serious, serious enough to “cut it off,” what does it say about our need for Christ’s forgiveness?

  • Since we know we live daily under God’s grace and forgiveness, why should we be so concerned about avoiding sinning? (see Romans 6:1-14)

Listen: Forgiven

Crowder - Forgiven (Lyric Video)

Kid Talk

Read Mark 9:38-50.

Does Jesus really want us to cut off our hand if it makes us sin? No, what Jesus wants us to do is to get rid of the things that tempt us to sin. Does cheating tempt you? Move so you can’t see someone’s paper. Does a show cause you to sin? Stop watching the show. And remember, when you do sin, Jesus forgives you.

Moses was discouraged. The Israelites were complaining again. So Moses went to God, and God filled 70 men with His Spirit. God encouraged Moses with these 70 men who spoke God’s words. When you are discouraged, go to God. He will send people to encourage you!

Why is it so good and important to be a part of a Christian church? We pray for one another in times of sickness and need. We sing songs of praise to God together. We help one another. Church is a blessing!

  • How does the promise of Psalm 104:27 give you comfort and peace? (see also Matthew 6:25-34)

  • The mountains, oceans, and animals of creation are great and marvelous, but the creation is nothing compared to the Creator! Psalm 104:32 describes the Almighty’s power over creation and everything in it. Does this fact bring fear? Or comfort?

Kid Talk

Read Psalm 104:27-35.

Have you ever thought about how the animals of the earth get food to eat and water to drink? Or how the trees, flowers, and other plants get the nourishment they need? God has provided for all the creatures of the earth. He has provided sun and water for the plants. He provides for you and me too!

  • Make a list of the ways that God provides for your needs each day.

Jesus, Lead Thou On -- LSB 718

Jesus, lead Thou on

Till our rest is won;

And although the way be cheerless,

Guide us by Thy hand

We will follow calm and fearless.

To our fatherland.

If the way be drear,

If the foe be near,

Let not faithless fears o’ertake us;

Let not faith and hope forsake us;

For through many_a woe

To our home we go.

When we seek relief

From a long-felt grief,

When temptations come alluring,

Make us patient and enduring.

Show us that bright shore

Where we weep no more.

Jesus, lead Thou on

Till our rest is won.

Heav’nly leader, still direct us,

Still support, console, protect us,

Till we safely stand

In our fatherland.

PRAYERS

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Luther's Evening Prayer

I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
