A Note from Dr. Burdett
We had a great week at PHS! Last week, our Hope Squad kids started the "Wear Yellow Wednesday" initiative. We encourage our kids to wear yellow every Wednesday in order to bring awareness to mental health. Thank you to Dana Walker's Fashion Design II class for incorporating this into their lessons (see below). I want to say a special "Thank you" to Cassandra Spratte who stopped in the hall this week to help one of our special needs students tie her shoe. This small act of kindness was noticed by Jen DeJong and Lyndsey Hamlin while they were greeting students in the hall during the passing period. The actions of our Hope Squad, our Fashion Design II classes, and of Cassandra are more examples of the greatness of our students at PHS. In addition, I appreciate our teachers using student initiatives to drive our learning and I appreciate our teachers being visible, connecting with kids, and highlighting the good at PHS! Good manners, empathy for others, and being a good person are traits that are learned at home and we appreciate and value all that our parents do to instill these values into our students. We count it a privilege to partner with our parents to reinforce these Prosper community values!
Congratulations to Katie Johnson for the publication of her article "Out of the Darkness: Hope, Healing, Help" in the Best of SNO website. Congratulations to Grant Johnson on being selected to the 2019-2020 Texas Association of Journalism Educators Student Advisory Panel. Click here for Katie's publication and click here for the story on Grant.
Congratulations to Tennis on our 10-8 victory over Plano Senior in the first round of the District Playoffs! We wish them the best against Plano West tomorrow. Congratulations to XC for the results at the Flower Mound Invitational where the girls and boys both placed 3rd. Volleyball went 2-0 last week with another huge road win against Allen on Tuesday and then ended the week with a home victory against Plano. This puts us at 6-0 in District play. Along with this good news for volleyball, we want to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Kauffman on being selected as Texas Coach of the Year!
We will begin beta-testing our Eagle Time adjustment on Tuesday. Please read below for our new process. This will make our kids safer and we will be able to maximize learning for all students during Eagle Time.
We are including a link to the Rock Hill Review in our newsletter so parents and students who will be attending Rock Hill High School can stay up-to-date on RHHS news and events. We appreciate Mr. Toth providing this information for all of our kids! Thank you to everyone who came out to the Sign the Beam event on Friday night! What an incredible show of unity from our community. TOGETHER, WE ARE PROSPER!
Please look at the calendar and see what you can attend. Our students would love to see you supporting them and noticing how our inputs are affecting our outcomes.
Every Wednesday is “Wear Yellow Wednesday” for Hope Squad.
From Ms. Walker's Fashion Design II class:
Today we totally scrapped the lesson plans and WENT YELLOW. We discussed how important it is to pour sunshine in other’s lives and how each and every person in my room has the opportunity have a positive impact on someone who feels hopeless. We still covered many TEKS: repurposing, draping, sustainability, interpersonal skills to problem solve, leadership skills to accomplish collective goals, describe social influences that affect fashion, positive behaviors and personal qualities for employability, construction techniques and color theory.
We wanted to thank you and the Hope Squad for awareness and positivity for the students at Prosper High School!

Counseling in the News
Misconceptions abound when it comes to what ADHD is (and what it isn’t). In honor of October being ADHD Awareness month, Psych Central website dispels some of the most common myths.
This past Tuesday, October 1, was the first day students can file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA) and the College Scholarship Service Profile (the CSS Profile) for the 2020-21 academic year. Filing early is important because financial aid can run out.
Every student getting ready for college is hit with the reality of how expensive higher education can be. It might be tempting to lie on the FAFSA. However, you could face criminal charges of fraud, and most of the time, you have to pay back any financial aid you received under false pretenses.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday that will permit college athletes in his state to receive financial compensation through endorsement deals and sponsorships, among other opportunities. The Washington Post examines this decision through the lens of one of sports' biggest stars: LeBron James.
Attention all Junior Students and Parents/Guardians,
Automatic Admissions- In accordance with the Texas Education Code (TEC), §51.803, a student is eligible for automatic admission to a Texas public college or university as an undergraduate student if the student earned a grade point average in the top 10 percent of the student's high school graduating class or in the percentage of qualified applicants that are anticipated to be offered admission to the University of Texas at Austin. Senate Bill 175, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature, allows The University of Texas at Austin to limit automatic admission to 75 percent of the university’s enrollment capacity designated for first-time resident undergraduate students.
The university has determined that it will automatically admit all eligible summer/fall 2021 and spring 2022 freshman applicants who rank within the top 6% of their high school graduating classes, with remaining spaces to be filled through holistic review. This percentage remains unchanged from last year. Click here for a letter from University President Gregory L. Fenves for more information.
If you have questions about automatic admissions requirements, please reach out to your child’s counselor.
