Westwood Families,
Our students have been working hard this trimester to achieve their academic goals, earn grades, and improve the skills they will need to be successful in their futures. Our staff work each day to bring engaging lessons to students and build relationships with kids. We are certainly thankful for this community of students, families, and staff.
In observance of the national Thanksgiving holiday there is no school tomorrow or Friday. We hope everyone enjoys the long weekend – however you spend the time. We’ll see students back at school on Monday, November 28.
We’ll wrap up the first trimester on December 1. Staff are using the final week to work with students to be ready for trimester 2. There is no school for students on Friday, December 2 or Monday, December 5. As we look ahead, please be planning for these days.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Tom Larson
Principal
Learning ancient life!
Students in Ms. Davé's class had a virtual visit with Dr. Yorke Rowan, an archaeologist doing field work in Amman, Jordan in the Middle East. Dr. Rowan spoke to the students about the petroglyphs he has discovered and what they tell us about ancient life in Jordan. This presentation was aligned with our learning around the petroglyphs in Jeffers, Minnesota.
Units of Measurement
Students in 6AIM began exploring the concepts of area and units of measurement. In this lesson, students found and used classroom items to help them answer the question, “how big is your desk?”
Solving fractions
6th Grade Spanish Immersion students worked in pairs or small groups solving fractions problems. They had to choose if the clock or the money should work better for solving each problem
Ever-changing moon
6th-grade Spanish Immersion students are applying what they have learned about the ever-changing moon unit. They have been observing patterns, analyzing and incorporating data and models to identify and explain the motions and scales of objects in the sky.
The worlds of North and South
Mrs. Delgado’s 7th-grade class compared the geography, transportation, society, and economy of the north and south. There were a variety of interactive and engaging activities that helped the students understand and analyze the topics discussed and collaborate in small groups. The integration of art and the process of writing a letter in Spanish helped them explain the differences presented in class.
Spooky Trail
Ms. Fritze’s math class completed the “Spooky Trail” math lesson by plotting equivalent fractions in a number line.
Westwood Spirit Wear
Thanks to everyone who ordered spirit wear! We can't wait to see students and staff in their Westwood gear! PTO began distributing spirit wear orders this week, if you have any questions about your order please reach out to Slp.Westwood.PTO@gmail.com.
Art Adventure
After several years off, we plan to offer Art Adventure, a program designed by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for 5th and 6th graders, again this year. We will need volunteers to visit student art classes and ask the students questions about the featured pieces of art. Volunteers don't need any experience or art knowledge, just a love of talking with students. There is training available from the museum and guide books so you don't need to memorize anything! We are aiming for this to take place in March, but training would be completed earlier. We would appreciate each volunteer to commit to 6-10 hours of class time so we can make sure to cover all classes. If you are interested in receiving more information, please email the PTO at WestwoodPTO@gmail.com.
