8th Grade Specialty High School Options
As crazy as it sounds, it is already the time of year for our students to start the process of learning about and applying to our specialty options programs for high school. The county wants all of the 8th graders to view the specialty option video and fill out an exit ticket on google forms that will record for us where our students are interested in going. Below is a link to the quick reference guide as well as the google form for interest.

What are students learning?
Mr. Garcia
This week students wrapped up their exploration of tectonic plates and reviewed relative dating. They also had their first Short Cycle Assessment (SCA) which provides us with data on how our students are doing with the current topics. Next week we will review Absolute dating with a lab in class while students online will begin exploring the geologic column.
8th Grade Science Weekly Agenda
Earth & Environmental:
This week students had a quiz that helps us to gauge how well they understand the first part of our astronomy unit. We then wrapped up our review of Earth's motions. Next week we will examine the Moon's motions around the sun with a mini lab.

Week of 11/9/2020
This week, students were introduced to the Reading Fundamentals Reading Workshop. The students learned the proper procedures for participating in the workshop, how to engage in class discussions, how to stop and jot during independent reading, what T.W.I.S.T. is and how to use it to understand poetry, and how to organize their reading notebooks. We read the poem, "Companion" and read and completed comprehension questions for "How Reading Changed my Life" from Lesson 1. Students were given one more week to complete their "Night Burial" alternate ending.
Week of 11/16/2020
In this week, we will continue to work in the Reading Workshop. The students will read, "Freedom", "Lamento", and "The Pen" poems from Lesson 7 and 8. Students will T.W.I.S.T. each poem to demonstrate their knowledge of the strategy and write to share their thoughts about each poem. They will complete reading comprehension questions for those poems as well. Students who are remote and face to face (when remote) need to really join our zoom classes. All Zoom class links and times are posted in the google classroom.

Week 13 (Nov. 9-13)
Reading Workshop Lesson 1: Students were introduced to the TWISTS poetry analysis strategy to help students identify the tone, word choice, imagery, structure, theme, and summary of a poem. Students analyzed and TWISTS the poem "Companion" and used the RACE writing strategy to cite evidence from the poem into their text-dependent answer. Students also analyzed an excerpt from Anna Quindlen's text "How Reading Changed My Life". Students completed the reading workshop connection questions to identify the author's purpose and theme.
Next week (Week 14 Nov. 16-20th) Reading Workshop Lessons 7 and 8.
Please encourage your student to read and jot down their readings in their independent reading log notebooks. Students should be reading every day and answering the weekly connection questions in their notebooks.
Remind your student to check my Google Classroom every day for their daily assignments.
Take care and stay safe!

Week of Nov 09 - Nov 13:
This week in social studies we have finalized the key factors of the colonies and we are moving forward in the discussion about the American Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War is by far one of my favorite history lessons so next week we will have so much fun with it! Your students are currently working on a Colony Poster Assignment where they use their poster as a sort of propaganda tool to convince Europeans to cross the Atlantic and come live at their colony. This week we also had great conversations about the lesser talked topic during the colonial era, slavery. The students will no longer need to check Edgenuity for assignments. All assignments are posted by me and are available in Google Classroom. In their best interest, have them check their email regularly and check Google Classroom regularly. The Weekly Agenda and Weekly Slides are all in Google Classroom under "Classwork."

This week we worked on Angle Relationships using the Desmos Platform. We also pulled in supplemental materials which helped us identify and named the angles. Next week, we will continue with Angle Relationships including solving Equations.
Parents, please continue to remind your student to do their best in completing their assignments in a timely manner. Also, encourage them to watch the videos posted to aid in the understanding of math content.

Ms. Brown
In Ms. Brown's Math class we began working with expressions, using grouping symbols, and following a system to solve multi-step expressions. Students are working to use systematic thinking and context building to write multi-step expressions to represent real world situations as well as "code" our thinking.
Next week we will continue working to write expressions to represent story problems and begin to combine like terms. We will also be working on solving multi-step expressions using given values of a variable.
Be sure to join us on Zoom daily from 1:30-2:30 and check google classroom for your classwork slides. If you need any help or get stuck, please let me know!

Mr. Foster
This week in Science we conducted a lab that demonstrated radioactive decay. Scientists use this to find out the ages of rocks and fossils. The lab marked the end of the section on Absolute dating. Next week we will begin to look at the geologic time scale. We will learn how Earth's history is divided up based on the type of life that existed at the time.
