Tiger of the Month: Critical Thinking
Victoria
Victoria has proven her ability to have an open mind and solve problems through critical thinking. She is able to think thoroughly through scenarios inside and outside of the classroom and come to her own conclusions.
Way to go, Victoria!
Journey
Journey Bullington is our Critical Thinking Tiger of the Month! Journey exhibits critical thinking in his classes, always seeking to give meaningful, thoughtful answers. Journey is a hard worker that serves PES on the Reading Bowl, Math Team, and Science Olympiad. Great job!
Sierra
Sierra is a master at critical thinking. She is consistent in thinking through problems and contributing to class discussions. She is able to think outside of the box and take on many different perspectives in coming up with ideas and solutions, both inside and outside of the classroom. Sierra, I am so proud of you!
What We Are Learning
ELA/ Reading
We have just started our second module, and have been focused on how authors use setting to affect characters in the text. We will explore two informational books, the SAS Survival Handbook and Mountains, building our prior knowledge as we dive in to our literary text, Hatchet. Students will study extreme environments as they write narratives about the strength we need to overcome challenges.
Vocabulary: solitary, extreme, prepositional phrases, clauses
Math
MGSE4.G.1 Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. MGSE4.G.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. MGSE4.G.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. MGSE4.MD.5 Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement: a. An angle is measured with reference to a circle with its center at the common endpoint of the rays, by considering the fraction of the circular arc between the points where the two rays intersect the circle. An angle that turns through 1/360 of a circle is called a “one-degree angle,” and can be used to measure angles. b. An angle that turns through n one degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees. MGSE4.MD.6 Measure angles in whole number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure. MGSE4.MD. 7 Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol or letter for the unknown angle measure. -What is a line segment? -What is a ray? -What are angles and what types of angles are their? -What is a perpendicular and parallel line and what is the difference between the two? -What is the process for measuring angles? Line, line segment, ray, angle, arc, point, figure, acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle, straight lines, vertex, interior angle, intersecting angle, perpendicular lines, diagonal lines, parallel lines, degrees, protractor, quadrilaterals, triangles, line symmetry
