The Week of September 16, 2019
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear LPE Families,
Greetings to our amazing Penguin community!
This week we are celebrating Instructional Assistant Appreciation Week in all Wake County Schools. Today, our teachers covered their class lunch time and provided a catered lunch for our amazing IA team. Please consider having your child share a note of gratitude this week or small token of appreciation. Although we celebrate all of our hard working staff during Teacher Appreciation week each spring, our IAs deserve their own spotlight!
Please consider signing up to be a member of our PTA. You may sign up online at this link:

Garden Club Update - Mid September
Only 4 Openings Remaining for Classroom Garden Lesson Facilitators!
We have just a few more openings for a classroom garden lesson facilitator in the following classrooms:
Alford
Tolp
Tweardy
Yothers
To ensure that every student at Laurel Park has the opportunity to engage with our school’s edible garden, “mini lessons” that align with science curriculum have recently been developed. The garden lesson facilitators will lead two lessons (approximately 30 minutes each) in the garden this school year. All volunteers are required to complete the WCPSS volunteer registration. This will be a very low time commitment and previous gardening experience is not required! A program overview will be provided and each lesson kit will include step-by-step instructions for the activity, discussion questions (with answers!) and all needed materials. We are excited to offer this new opportunity to engage with your child’s class!
Please email lpesgardenclub@gmail.com to learn more or sign up!

Lucky's Library Updates from Mrs. LeSueur
Lucky’s Library is excited that we have checked out almost 9,000 books this year. We are fortunate to have such a great library as a resource for students!
Did you know that your student has access to over 15,000 free ebooks? They can access Big Universe from home and using their school login, read any of those titles for free. There are books available at all levels. From the Laurel Park website, go to Students – Digital Resources – Big Universe. Log in information is at that location. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mrs. LeSueur at alesueur@wcpss.net.
We will be sending overdue notices via email this year. Please remember that we do NOT charge fines for overdue books. As long as the book is returned, there are no fees. If you are tracked out, just return the books when you start school again. Also, if your student believes they have already returned the book, simply email me (Mrs. LeSueur) and I’m happy to check the shelves for you. Book that are accidentally returned to the public library will eventually be sent to us, although it may take a few weeks.
What's Going on in Social Thinking?
In Social thinking class, kindergarten through 5th graders have been learning about what it means to have a group plan. Being in a group can be hard work but we worked on focusing on a goal and keeping positive.
Box Tops are Going Digital!
Hi Parents, As some of you may already know, Box Tops is going digital. What does this mean you ask? You now will just need to download the Box Tops app and scan your receipt and your earnings are credited right away. No more clipping, having to keep up with them, and making sure to send in before they expire. You have 14 days to scan a receipt. As of right now if you use certain online retailers to shop you can email your receipt to receive credit for box tops products. There are more detailed directions and a list of retailers on the app. It is all very easy!! There is also a tab that lists all the products by category. Hopefully there are plans to be able to enter screen shots of online receipts for the times you may pay with your phone/app and don't actually get a paper receipt but until then be sure to use the email method of the retailers they have listed. There are still some products with box tops you can clip and send in. But once all those products are sold it will be completely digital. I will still be collecting and sending in any that are not expired so just keep checking on box tops products you use. The app is extremely easy to use and shows the schools earnings and how much you have earned. It also has ways to earn bonus box tops. Please continue to support that school with box tops earnings.
