Message from Administration
March was a busy month for students at Silver Ridge! We began the month with a dino-mite book fair, Silver Pals searched for shamrocks, students dressed down to showcase the fashion of past decades, and more! Academically, our SECME Team competed in a variety of events at the Science and Engineering competition, and our Mathletes made us proud at competition. After a month of learning and growing, students and staff got to relax for a week during Spring Break.
The month of April will likely fly by as quickly as March! Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) testing begins the week after Spring Break, and we need your help to set our students up for success. You can help our students do their best by ensuring your children get a full night of sleep - at least 9 full hours according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. It's also important that students get a great breakfast, and this can be provided at home or for free at school from 7:30-8:00 daily. While sleep and nutrition are essential to student success on tests, they're equally important every other day of the year!
It's common for students to feel anxious about testing and the academic demands that come at the end of each school year. It's important to keep an open dialogue at home about this stress. While doing well on exams is important, we know that every child is more than a test score. We have incredible students who will pursue many different fields and be successful! Please reassure your children that as long as they try their best, we are proud of them!
Check out the rest of this newsletter for information about upcoming events; current and future School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings and recruitment; updates from the Media Center, Clinic, and Guidance; testing dates; middle school information; and more. As always, thank you for all that you do to make Silver Ridge "the Best in the West"!

Did you know that when children explicitly learn and practice kindness, serotonin levels increase, leaving them more open to learning? Kindness might seem like such a simple quality... but unless we TEACH children to be kind, it won't become an integral part of their being.
So HOW do we teach kindness to children? One way is through stories and examples. And usually watching MOVIES where characters demonstrate kindness and compassion work way better than lecturing kids on the virtues of kindness.
Grab this week's PRINTABLE list of top 30 kindness and friendship movies and get ready for a fun movie night!

Note from the Nurse
During the month of March, Silver Ridge was visited by dental hygienists from the Health Department. These professionals saw and treated over 400 children! Students walked away with brighter smiles and cleaner teeth. This will be an annual event, so make sure you complete and return the forms next school year if your would like to have your child's teeth cleaned and sealed at school.

News from the Media Center
Thanks for Your Support - Spring Book Fair
Sincere thanks for the support of our recent book fair. We earned over $5,000 in cash profit and over $3,000 in Scholastic resources for the Media Center. We could never run such a successful fair without the wonderful help from our parents and volunteers. Volunteers assisted with set up, created decorations, helped shoppers, manned cash registers and dismantled the book fair. The biggest benefit from the book fair is watching all our students walking around with their nose in a book! A special note of appreciation goes to Melissa Gurlacz, Ann Dalelio, and Katie Yanks for their tireless dedication and efforts on the cash registers.
Reading Across Broward
Reading Across Broward is an initiative sponsored by the district for students to keep track of their reading. There are two ways to accomplish this.
- Reading logs are sent home annually. There are two drafts of the form, one for our younger readers that focuses on picture books, and one for our intermediate students reading novels. Four levels of achievement are noted; participation, silver, gold and Superintendent's level.
- The second means of tracking reading is digitally through Beanstack, an app. Beanstack is available through the student portal, Clever. Digital badges are also awarded through Beanstack.
Sunshine State Young Reader Award
Voting is underway in the Sunshine State Young Reader award program. Kindergarten through second graders are ALL eligible to vote as Ms. Aaron reads ten of the fifteen nominated titles to them. The additional five beginning chapter books are available through check out and students who read all five are invited to a Popsicle party in May. Students in third through fifth grades must read at least three of the fifteen novels in order to be able to vote for a favorite. All voters must finish at least three of the books and vote prior to April 12th in order to be invited to the ice cream party which takes place in late April or May. The new SSYRA lists for the 2019-20 school year will be released on April 18th.
Please see the calendar below for a list of great opportunities available at West Regional Library this month!

Getting Ready for Middle School
Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 5 students:
It’s time to start thinking about Middle School. If you have moved within the past year or so and have not come in to change your address in the school database, you need to do so. The acceptance of your child’s Subject Selection Card by a receiving middle school depends on the address that is currently in the BCPS TERMS database. If you have moved, you will need specific documentation to have your address changed. You may check with Ms. Annette Baguatie, Data Entry Specialist, in the front office or call 754-323-7500 to find out what proof of address you may need.
Also, some parents mistakenly believe that enrollment at Silver Ridge Elementary means a student is automatically enrolled/assigned to Indian Ridge Middle School. That is not the case. All schools have boundaries and it is your current address that determines your middle school. Currently we have students within the Silver Ridge boundaries that live within the boundaries of Driftwood Middle, Pioneer Middle, and Indian Ridge. Students who have been reassigned to Silver Ridge will attend their home middle school, unless you apply for and are granted reassignment to another Middle School.
If you are not in the boundaried area for a specific Middle School you want your child to attend, you may apply for reassignment. Some of you may have already done so. The reassignment window reopens on May 1, 2019. Please check http://browardschools.com/schoolchoice for further info. regarding reassignment requests. Thank you.
Parent Input
As we approach the end of the school year, parents are welcome to submit a letter regarding 2019-2020 classroom placement. Requests for specific teachers will not be considered, but a description of student needs (classroom size, learning style, classroom environment, etc.) may be submitted to administration by June 1, 2019.
