Health Information for 2021-2022 School Year
_______________________________________
Health Information as of July 27, 2021
It is our intent to follow health guidelines for the safety and well-being of all students and staff. It is important to understand the interpretation of recommendations verses requirements.
There are distinctions between recommended and required in the synonyms and examples below. This publication is to clarify these terms as we prepare reopening statements for Trussville City Schools August 2:
RECOMMENDED: advised, suggested, preferred, encouraged, endorsed, not required, not mandatory
REQUIRED: officially mandated, compulsory, considered essential, commanded by authority
Please take a look at the examples below as interpretations of the meaning of recommended and required with regard to masks and COVID-19 vaccinations:
Example #1) The CDC and the AAP have recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for persons 12 and older. This means COVID-19 vaccinations are suggested and encouraged, but not required.
Example #2) The CDC and the AAP have currently recommended that students wear masks when they return to school. This was discussed at the board meeting July 19. This means masking children is suggested and encouraged, but not required. This is where we were July 19 and where we are today.
Example #3) Last year, there was a mask mandate for a period of time in Alabama. This meant that everyone was required to wear a mask. This requirement was commanded by the authority of the Governor and was compulsory for everyone. This is where we were last year.
As discussed at our July Board of Education meeting, we will let everyone know specific reopening health plans on or before August 2 as we await specific guidance from Alabama health officials.
We are so looking forward to the start of a brand new school year! As of today, masking children is suggested and encouraged, but not required. Look for more information soon!
