Take a Taste Tuesday
How exciting to be already up to the letter “J” for Take a Taste Tuesday. This week the students in Mrs. Brooks’ and Mrs. Schramek”s first grade classes got to try Jicama. Jicama is also called the Mexican Potato. It is an ugly brown root vegetable that doesn’t look very appetizing. However, once it is peeled and sliced we found out that it is a crisp and sweet tasting vegetable. Jicama is a great source of fiber and has some vitamins and minerals in it as well. It is available year round. We learned that it must be peeled because the peel could make us sick if we eat it. Miss Grace sliced the jicama into thin “chips.” The bowl full of jicama chips smelled just like apples. Only 2 people did not like the taste of Jicama. Everyone else loved it. Jicama is a fun vegetable that is usually eaten raw. Some people sprinkle it with honey or spices – even chili powder, and add it to salads. Maybe your family would like to try Jicama this week.

Your Child’s Immunization Records
Did you know that you can access the entire immunization record that the school has on file for your child? All you have to do is sign in to the Parent Portal. This is the same website that you go to update your child’s information at the beginning of the school year: parentportal.pisd.edu
Once you have logged in to the main screen, if you look on the right side of the screen and scroll down near the bottom you will see “Immunization Summary.” You can print your child’s school immunization record from this screen.
Friendly Reminders -
- Just a reminder the Schwan's Cares campaign is still running through December 16th. If you haven't already, please take a moment to see if you would like to purchase an eGift Card for yourself and/or others this holiday season. Life is busy so make meal preparation easy on yourself this fall season and support Carlisle in the process. Who wouldn't want the gift of convenience delivered right to their door! Please encourage friends and family to participate as well, we need outreach from everyone in order to make this fundraiser a success!
- Winter has arrived. Please dress children appropriately. Remember to put their name in all coats and sweaters.
- Missing a jacket or sweater? Check our Lost and Found, it is located by the cafeteria. We have many items turned in this time of year with chilly mornings and warm afternoons. We will purge these items at semester break to make room for new items.
- In the event of winter weather please refer to the PISD web page at www.pisd.edu for school closings. School closings will also be listed on all local radio and TV stations.
- We realized parking on school premises is limited, however, when parking on the street, please be mindful not to park in front of mailboxes. It has been reported some homes are not receiving their mail daily because of cars parked in front of their mailbox.
- During the school day, we are working diligently to create an instructionally sound environment with minimal distractions for all students. We understand that you have items or messages that you might need to get to your student during the day. Please use the bins in the front office to drop these items off. The bins are checked a couple of times a day. Our learning stops each time a visitor comes into the grade level area. We actually encourage you not to bring up items such as homework and lunches that may have been left at home as we work together to build responsibility and resilience in all Carlisle Coyotes.
- The school front doors open at 7:00 a.m. Students must arrive before 7:45 a.m. as classroom instruction begins promptly. Student pick up is at 2:45 p.m. Please make sure your child knows their plans on how they are getting home. If your child has a change in departure plans, please notify the office BEFORE 2:00 p.m. to insure your child receives the message. Notes are picked up from the bins at 2:15. Also, if it is necessary to pick your child up from school early, please arrive before 2:30. No student will be called down after 2:30 for early dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation.
- The front office opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 3:30 p.m. each day. Entrance into the building after 3:30 will not be permitted unless you have an appointment.
- Science Fair at Carlisle will be Thursday, January 12, 2017.
Science and Engineering Fair is Coming!
The Carlisle Science Fair is quickly approaching! Science and Engineering Fair projects are due Thursday, January 12th at 7:45 a.m. and should be submitted to each student's homeroom teacher.
