Weekly Update

Dear Families,

Another busy week has passed! We had our second of 3 Fall Fire Drills today: students and staff calmly and efficiently exited the building and were all accounted for in less than ten minutes. Well done, Hawks!

Students and staff are very excited to support the Terry Fox Foundation with our run/walk next Thursday at 2:00. We have set a fundraising goal of $2000. If we meet this goal, M Jacques has volunteered to shave his head! Thank you to everyone who has been supporting this important fundraiser through online donations at: http://www.terryfox.ca/JamesRHendersonPSKingston or by bringing in a donation to school next week. We are so proud to be carrying on this incredible Canadian tradition at our school.

We are excited to have begun our first school fundraiser, which will support guest speakers, special presentations and school events like Zumba. Information was sent home with students this week: through this school fundraiser you can purchase re-usable cloth bags, wet bags, organic cotton washcloths and reusable silicone straws. You’ll also being doing your part towards helping our environment by reducing single use plastics.

You can order online by going to https://colibrifundraising.com/ (select James R. Henderson at checkout), or place a paper order through the school. All orders will be delivered to the school and then sent home with your child.

The deadline for orders is Monday, September 30th. Thank you for your support!

Our Soccer Teams have been getting as many practices in as possible with Coach Morrison and Coach Jaques: we wish good luck to the Intermediate team at their tournament on Monday, to the Junior Boys on Tuesday, and to the Junior Girls on Thursday. The tournaments run all day at Woodbine Park. Bonne chance!

Students on the Cross Country Team have been training several times each week, and many students are running on Wednesdays in order to get into shape, and become part of the vibrant running community at Henderson. It is amazing to see our students embracing the opportunity to improve their fitness! Thank you to Mme Davey, Mme Fox, Mme Gallupe and Mrs Mace for their support.

Coming soon: Greenie's Grapevine Monthly! Last year, a dedicated group of students began creating word searches, sudokus, riddles and artwork that was added to the Weekly Update. This year, they are going to produce a monthly, online student newsletter. They have been interviewing the staff who have been coaching our teams, working on artwork and researching some "fun facts" that will be both educational and entertaining. We hope to have our first edition ready for publication at the end of September. Thank you to Mme Peart and Mme Creighton for their work with this club.

We hope to see many families at our Open House next Thursday, September 26th! A reminder that Parent Council will be having a "Pizza Party" from 5:30-6:00 and the Open House will be from 6:00-7:00.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mme Peart and Mrs. Davey

Food Allergy Awareness

A reminder to families that due to the prevalence of peanut and tree nut allergies, we do ask that all parents refrain from sending products that may contain nuts to school, even if there is not a specific nut allergy in your child's classroom. We appreciate your efforts and support to ensure that all of our students are safe at school. If your child has any allergies or medical conditions of which the school is not aware, please inform your child's teacher immediately, so that we can ensure that we have all of the information required to keep children safe at school.

Parent Council Update

Thank you to everyone who attended the first Parent Council Meeting last night. We have a dynamic group, who are ready to work hard on behalf of our staff and students. What a lucky school we are! Elections were held for the positions of Chair (Erica Benn), Treasurer (Mark Foster) and Secretary (Angela Haibach). There are also a number of committees that can always use new members to support special events, fundraising and school initiatives throughout the year: Finance, Learning Commons, Family Movie Night, MayFair, Fundraising, Consumables, Hot Lunch, Eco-Initiatives and Staff Appreciation are all Committees that welcome new members! Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 24th from 6:45-8:45. Free childcare is provided. Hope to see you there!

James R Henderson Parking Guide

Drop off and pick up times are very busy, and we want to ensure the safety of all of our students and their caregivers as they enter and exit the school. Please consult the Driving and Parking Guide below to see where there are safe, designated parking spaces that are all within a 3 minute walk to the school. The area directly in front of the school is a designated student drop off zone: you must remain in your vehicle and are permitted to stop for a maximum of 3 minutes. A reminder that parking is not permitted on the shoulder of Roosevelt Drive opposite the school, and that the City of Kingston will be enforcing this no-parking zone. Thank you for ensuring that you help to keep everyone safe by respecting our drop-off and parking guidelines. A reminder that supervision on the yard is from 8:55 until the bell rings at 9:15.
