Reading Workshop
During the next few weeks, we will be exploring the theme Changes, Changes Everywhere. We will read about babies growing up, making new friends, how plants grow – even how goats' wool gets changed into a rug! As we read, we will explore the Big Idea “Living Things Change over Time.”
During the first week, we will read Penguin Chicks; about Emperor Penguins and how they raise their babies. We’ll also read about several animals in Animal Poems. Both of these selections will give us information to use as we think about the question, “How do you know which facts are important?”
Target Vocabulary: finally, junior, otherwise, slippery, steer, waterproof, webbed, whistle
Phonics Skills: Words with r-controlled vowels; er (father), ir (bird), ur (nurse)
Vocabulary Strategy: Dictionary entry
Comprehension Skill: Main ideas and details -- tell important ideas and details about a topic
Comprehension Strategy: Infer/predict -- use text clues to figure out important ideas
Writing Workshop
The class will continue to focus on the formation of single digit numbers. Similar to numbers, it is important to begin each number at the top and write them in a downward motion.
The students are enjoying and working hard creating their nonfiction text feature books. In order to allow the students to get the most out of the process, they will have more time to include additional text and visual features and fine-tune their work
Math
This week we will wrap up Chapter 12 and the students will take the test prior to Spring Break.
