Political Career
In 1968, George H.W. Bush won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and ran for two terms. A few years later, President Richard Nixon assigned Bush as the U.S. Ambassador of the United Nations and he held this position from 1971-1973 when he became the chairman of the republican party. In 1974, President Gerald Ford appointed him as the leader of the U.S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China, until he became the leader of the CIA in 1976 which he resigned from in 1977. In 1980, after running for the presidential campaign and losing to Ronald Reagan he was chosen to be Ronald's vice president for two terms. George H.W. Bush became a republican presidential candidate in 1988 with his vice president, Dan Quayle. He was elected into office as the 41st president on January 20, 1989 and continued his presidency until January 20, 1993.
- Federal Budget (1989) - When Bush entered office in 1989 the federal budget was at $2.8 trillion which made it hard for Bush to enact on domestic affairs so he pushed for education reform, volunteerism, and anti-drug efforts.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) - prohibited discrimination of people with disabilities in employment and transportation.
- Clean Air Act (1990) - This act was encouraged by the Exxon Valdez oil spill in March of 1989 and pushed for the reduction of urban smog, acid rain, and industrial emissions of toxic chemicals.
- Panama & Noriega (1989)
- End of the Cold War & U.S.-Soviet Relations (1989) - During this time the Berlin Wall was destroyed.
- German Unification (1990)
- Persian Gulf War (1990) - Iraq invaded Kuwait at the time Saddam Hussein was the president. The United States joined with Arab countries to try to get Iraq to pull back from Kuwait.
