Kudos to Stephen Minor for once again providing his AP Literature students with an authentic audience for their writing - his yearly participation in the Voice of Democracy essay contest is truly a special event.

Great news! Laurie Spector was selected this past weekend at the Harvard Club of Long Island as she accepted the 2016 Distinguished Teacher Award, for the Distinguished Teacher Scholarship and given an Honorary Lifetime Membership. She would like to visit Harvard over April break for her Harvard experience as the student who nominated her for this award, David Sheynberg will be graduating in May. She has up to 18 months to visit Harvard for this experience. The Harvard Club of LI is paying for her tuition and living up to $1,250.

Please join us in congratulating Laurie on this well-deserved honor.

Student Activities

Cancer Awareness Club

On April 1st, 2016, Oceanside High School’s Cancer Awareness Club hosted their 2nd annual cancer-gone dance-o-thon called O-THON. Over the past two years, O-THON has helped raise over $37,000 for the Four Diamonds Foundation for pediatric cancer treatment and research. O-THON is a student-run philanthropy through the Cancer Awareness Club that is committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. Their mission is to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness, and ensure funding for critical research ― all in pursuit of a cure. Led by advisor Mrs. Gallante and club officers, Rachel Myers, Gabby Mauro, Melanie Bert, Kelly Polous, Jason Denrich, Natalia Revere, and Keith Gronsbell, the Cancer Awareness Club spent many hours and days preparing for this year’s event. Our dedicated and passionate club members spent weekends “canning” outside of Stop & Shop or Dunkin Donuts as well as after school hours and holiday breaks painting the artwork which decorated the entire High School gymnasium. On the night of the event, dancers remained on their feet for six hours while many local sports and clubs at Oceanside High School performed dances to show their support. Performances included OHS’s varsity dance team, varsity cheer team, best buddies, girls varsity lacrosse, thespians, and Sport Night’s 2016 Broadway Blue and Warrior White. Students danced the night away to raise awareness and support for pediatric cancer while proudly displaying the theme of the night across their shirts: “One day we will dance in celebration, but until then we will dance for a cure.”

Message from Pat Turk...

Happy April Oceanside! We’ve been having a tremendous spring. We have several events, still yet to come, as we make our way towards the end of the school year.

The Oceanside Film Festival showed our talents ranging far and wide in the OHS Auditorium. We hope all members of the staff enjoyed this evening. Please encourage your students to continue their involvement making films.

The Mother Daughter Dinner hosted over 240 ladies in the cafeteria. This was an excellent event dating back to the 1960s. We had wonderful performances by Rachel Hernstat, Rebecca Marks, Ephifany Morillo, and Joanna Podias.

Battle of the Bands is on Friday, May 13th. We have never had such a diverse array of genres and styles performing in one single evening. However, this event is one night only. These students have worked tirelessly on their covers and original songs. This is a night you're not going to want to miss. The students have chosen that all proceeds will go towards the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Please continue to listen to the announcements and check the High School’s homepage for upcoming events and opportunities. Student Government elections are on the horizon and we will be going digital with our election process for the first time. Don’t forget to follow us on twitter @OHSSAO to see some great pics from the Mother/Daughter Dinner and more!
