Madison Guidance Lessons
This year, Madison students will have guidance lessons an hour each month with our counselor, Mrs. Clegg. Guidance lessons are structured time with the focus on teaching our students the skills to be secure emotionally and socially as well as support academic and career readiness. Each month, we will focus on specific character education topics.
For the month of September, guidance lessons will focus on EMPATHY and TOLERANCE. The first step to having a kind school is to understand what another person is feeling and know how to respond. We will use our new Second Step curriculum to explore these concepts. It is important for students to know how to recognize emotion (look at the face, look at the body, listen to their words). Students will practice identifying emotions and respond appropriately. We will also spend time talking about our differences. Those differences make us unique. Differences make our school a great place to be. It is never okay to be cruel to someone just because they are different from us.
To extend at home:
Use “I notice” statements when your child is emotional. (example: “I notice your eyes are looking at the ground and your mouth is turned down. I think you are sad. Would you like to talk about it?” or “I notice your face is scrunched up and your muscles are tense and your voice is loud. Tell me about your mad feelings.”)
Have your child identify how they think someone else is feeling. Help them process through how to respond.
