Running is Elementary
Running Club Reflections
Elm Road runners enjoyed another successful Run Club season. We practiced seven times after school. Then we hosted the meet for all of the elementary schools in the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation. Hundreds of fourth and fifth graders from all 11 schools on Monday, April 29 to run the mile on our course.
We started the season with practices. Our hour long practices were filled with stretching, running the mile each time, and playing running games. Emily Signorino shared that she enjoyed playing the different tag games after the mile run. She also appreciated her “supportive teammates.”
Race day was very exciting. Matt Luczkowksi said that his favorite part was the finish line. “Everyone cheered us on as we crossed the finish line. Then we got refreshments to cool us down. When we returned to the Elm Road camp, our team said, “Good job!”
Companionship was Nathan McKinnies’ favorite part. He loved the way the team cheered him on. “It made us feel better” as we were running the race!
These three runners, along with many others, look forward to joining the running fun again next year. Many fifth graders plan to take their running enthusiasm to Grissom where they can join the cross country team.
Keep on running!
Mrs. Creighton's Reading Corner
As we head into summer break, I wanted to share some information on the effects of screen use and children. In the last few years, technology has advanced at a rapid rate. With this advancement, the use of screens has increased across the general population. We have easy access to screens through mobile devices. There have been many studies conducted to see the effects of “screen time” on children and adults.
Research has shown that the use of screens can have a negative impact on children’s developing brains. Studies are revealing that “screen time” affects mood and behavior.
It is not surprising that research is showing that the overuse of screens can delay speech, hinder the development of expressive language, and impact social interactions. Many times children are not getting enough sleep because of screen use at bedtime. All of these delays can hinder your child’s academic success.
Another area of research is screen addiction. Adults and children alike are becoming too dependent on screen devices. I encourage you to read the articles on screen use from Today’s Parent. The articles can help you determine if you are managing your family’s screen time in a healthy manner. The articles also include tips on managing screen time.
You can access the articles at:
www.todaysparent.com/family/family-healthy/9-signs-of-screen-addiction-in-kids./
I hope that you find this information helpful to you and your family. Have a safe and wonderful summer break. I look forward to seeing you all in August! Please remember to visit the library and enjoy some great books with your family.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Creighton

Student Gym Teachers for the Day
Our second grade gym teacher for the day. Anna Lee purchased this opportunity at the silent auction at the fun fair!! She had a blast and was an excellent teacher too!
What's Happening in PE
Dear Parents,
Wow! I cannot believe that it is the end of the school year. Thank you to everyone for another successful fun-filled year in the gym. I sincerely enjoy engaging children in exercise and teaching healthy habits at Elm Road Elementary. While it’s always sad to say "good-bye" to the fifth graders, I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities to watch children grow next school year. During physical education, we have learned about the four elements of fitness (muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance), health/nutrition, body systems and benefits of exercising. Some of the units we covered have been: soccer, football, volleyball, racket sports, fire safety, cooperative games, fitness testing, basketball, jump rope, aerobic fitness, heart challenge course, bowling and base sports. Your child was also introduced to fitness games, warm-ups and stretches as well as the opportunity to enhance perceptual, fine and gross motor skills.
It is my hope that parents continue to encourage children to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired during class by seeking opportunities to be active during the summer months.
We are closing out the school year with “Fun in the Sun” day on June 5th ! Thank you to all the parent volunteers we have scheduled to lead stations on this date. If you are available and did not have the opportunity to sign up to help on this date, please contact me at dparisi@phm.k12.in.us or call 259-3743. And of course, hats off to the fifth grade “fun in the sun” committee that worked so hard to make it an exciting day for everyone.
Have an awesome summer with your family!!
Sincerely,
Debbie Parisi and Mike Phipps
