Math Intervention News
September 2023
Our Districtwide aMath Test is used to determine which students are to be selected to participate in my classes. After attending my classes for several weeks, students are retested. Based on the results, students may or may not continue attending my class.
Students who participate in my program are encouraged to ask questions and discuss Math concepts that they are practicing in the classroom. Students are feeling an extra boost of support as they apply the skills they learned in my class in their teacher's classroom.
I have started off the year focusing on Number Sense skills. I have been checking in with some of my students I worked with last year and students who are new to Lin Howe in Grades 1st through 5th. Some examples of the skills I screen for are: Students are asked to read numbers and count forward and backwards starting with numbers appropriate for each grade level's essential Math standards. Students are asked to match equations and math representations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, depending on the student's grade level. Recognizing number patterns using place value is also an important skill -- Examples: 34 + 10, 278 - 10, 569 + 100, etc.
Next, I will be focusing on working with students in small, teaching the math skills needed to support alongside the classroom teacher's math skills and concepts that are currently being taught.

A great way to connect with your child's education is through our districtwide Bridges Math Program. You will find that some Math skills are taught the same way as when you were your child's age. There are other skills that may look a bit different. Our Math program website does a great job of highlighting the similarities and differences.
The Bridges website is filled with fun daily Math activities, collections of practice pages, family games, and online games. Easy access to the math resources is added on with no login or registration required. Some activities are designed for students to use independently or with support from adults.
All resources are housed in the Bridges website called: The Math Learning Center. All activities are organized by grade level.
