6th and 8th Grade Math

With Ms. Watkins

February 5, 2016

Office Hours (math help after school)

Monday's 3:15-4:00 in room 403 with Ms. Watkins

Wednesday's 3:15-4:00 in room 401 with Miss Brockman.

This is a time when students may come in and begin their homework, work on reassessment, or just receive additional help with math. All middle school students are welcome to come to either or both office hours.

Expectations:

  1. Work on math material first.
  2. Keep voices down so that everyone can focus on their own material.
  3. If a student wants or needs a snack, it must be nut free.

Middle School Math Reassessment Policy

If your child wishes to reassess in Math they must meet with their teacher before or after school within one week of receiving the assessment in the red folder. For example, if red folders are sent home on Friday, your child has until the following Friday to meet with me. During this meeting your child will develop an individual plan with me to determine how they will be reassessed. Reassessments must be completed within one week of meeting with me.

6th Grade Math

This week we focused on Triangles on Monday. Students learned about the sum of the angles in triangles and how to classify triangles by their sides and angles. On Tuesday we talked about polygons and quadrilaterals. Students learned about properties of social quadrilaterals. Wednesday students reviewed in class and they also created bookmarks for the service project. The 7.1-7.4 quiz was on Thursday. Friday we will talk about congruent figures and I took 6A to the science fair at the end of class.

Next week on Monday we will continue to talk about congruent figures. Students will be learning about arcs and lines in circles on Tuesday, Wednesday we will talk about circle graphs and students will learn how to create them with a spreadsheet and also how to use proportions to calculate the measure of the central angels for each part of the circle graph. On Thursday students will need their compasses so that they can create geometric constructions. Friday and the following Tuesday will be review. Monday, February 10th will be the chapter 7 test.

There have been several times that I assign watching a video as part of the homework. This will continue throughout the year. I have talked with the class about the importance of watching the video and taking notes. If your child is having trouble accessing the video please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room on one of the school computers.

8th Grade Standard Pace

On Monday students in 8A made art on graph paper using linear functions with parents and grandparents that attended. To those that were able to come, it was great seeing you. For those that were not able to attend, you were missed. Students in 8B did the same activity without help form parents and grandparents as their class was later in the day. On Tuesday students were applying linear functions to real world situations. Wednesday students learned about standard form of linear equations. Thursday and Friday we did not have class due to Catholic schools week events.

Next week I will introduce point-slope form of linear equations on Monday. Tuesday students will review and on Wednesday they will take a quiz on 6.1-6.5. For the second half of Wednesday's class I will talk about parallel and perpendicular lines. Thursday and Friday students will use point-slope forms of linear equations to write the equation of the line of best fit on scatter plots.

There will be several times that a video will be assigned as part or all of the homework for the rest of this year. If your child is having difficulty accessing or watching the videos please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room or in their homeroom on one of the school computers.

8th Grade Accelerated Pace

On Monday students in 8A made art inspired by the De Stijl art movement using linear functions with parents and grandparents that attended. To those that were able to come, it was great seeing you. For those that were not able to attend, you were missed. Students in 8B did the same activity without help form parents and grandparents as their class was later in the day. On Tuesday we talked about writing the equation for a line of best fit for a scatter plot. Students took the quiz for the first part of Wednesday's class. The remainder of the class they worked to finish the scatter plot activity by calculating their line of best fit. Thursday and Friday we did not have class due to Catholic schools week events.

Next week we will discuss absolute value functions on Monday. Tuesday students will review for the test and on Wednesday they will take the chapter 6 test. For the second half of Wednesday's class students will work on solving systems on linear equations graphically. On Thursday and Friday I will talk about using substitution to solve systems of linear equations.

There will be several times that a video will be assigned as part or all of the homework for the rest of this year. If your child is having difficulty accessing or watching the videos please arrange for them to come to school right at 7:40 so that they can watch it in my room or in their homeroom on one of the school computers.
