Principal's Message
February was a successful I Love to Read Month. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Reimer, our Literacy Support Teacher, for all of the time and effort she put into making the month the success that it was.
I want to offer my congratulations to all the students who met or exceeded their reading goals. Many students earned prizes, including some pretty incredible grand prizes. Please see our thank you note below to all of the sponsors who made the prizes happen!
We encourage all students to continue reading throughout the coming months. The more you read, the better you will continue to get at it!

Newcomer Cafe
The purpose of the Newcomer Care is:
To meet other Newcomer Families in our community!
To ask questions you might have about our school and the Canadian school system!
The Newcomer Cafe will take place in the Library from 4:00 to 5:00. We will be going over some information about how to sign up for and use the Parent Portal, SeeSaw, and how to access Report Cards which are coming out at the end of March.
Eastman Immigrant Services has kindly agreed to support this event and will provide a Ukrainian language translator for those who may require translation.
Coffee and light snacks will be provided!
Interested in Volunteering???
As Spring is approaching (we hope!) one thing that is on our mind is Learning Trips. You may remember these as Field Trips from your childhood. Over the years these have been renamed as Learning Trips to better reflect the emphasis on the experiential learning that happens on these trips.
Each year we need volunteers to help these Learning Trips happen. Many places require an adult to student ratio that is beyond what we can provide with school staff. Plus, this is a great opportunity to participate in your child's learning in a fun and unique way.
All volunteers require three items completed:
- Child Abuse Registry Check
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Pledge of Confidentiality
If you have completed these in another HSD school in recent years, you likely are already listed as a volunteer in our system. If you are unsure, please contact the school office (204-326-3325) to verify. Additionally, while the Child Abuse Check and Criminal Record Check only need to be refreshed every 5 years, the Pledge of Confidentiality needs to be updated yearly. This can be done in the Parent Portal or by contacting the school office.
Please note, the Child Abuse and Criminal Record Checks can take up to 6 weeks to be returned to us, and they need to be on file in order to volunteer. If you are even remotely interested in volunteering in the near future, please fill these out ASAP. Information is available at the school office or by calling (204-326-3325) or emailing (elmdale@hsd.ca) the school office.
Where are some other places I might be able to volunteer?
- Learning (Field) Trips
- Reading Club
- Grade 3/4 Swimming (last day of school)
- Grade 2 Swimming Lessons (weekly from April-June)
- Grade 3/4 Skating (fall)
If you, or your child's grandparent or other relative might be interested in volunteering for one of these events, please have them fill out the paperwork now, so that when the event comes up, they will be ready!
I Love to Read
Our February I Love to Read Month was a resounding success! Many students met and exceeded their monthly reading goals and grew tremendously as readers! We had lots of fun reading-themed activities including special assembly guests, dress up like a book character days, and many, many prizes!!
A huge thank you to the following local businesses who helped make this a success by donating towards our prizes! We really appreciate the support from our community!
Booster Juice
Fairway Ford
Keystone Cinema
Old Church Bakery
Little Caesar's Pizza
Boston Pizza
Parent Reminders
If you need to pick your child up early, please make sure to do so BEFORE 3:15. The end of the day can be a very busy time at the school office, so planning ahead really helps us out!
Similarly, if you are dropping your child off late, please make sure they check in at the office to get a late slip. Parents are not permitted to walk their children to class. Should your child need assistance getting to class, one of our staff members will gladly take them.
